CONFESSIONS OF A YOUTUBE SUPERGIRL: A Word With LIFE XP Series Creator, Actress Cassandra Ebner
It had been a while since I was in touch with actress and stunt performer Cassandra Ebner, and so in the months since she released a trailer for upcoming webseries, Life XP, it remained on the back of my mind. It’s a good thing I remembered it too seeing as Ebner just recently received funding for the new series and she sounded visibly excited when she posted the update on Facebook.

HIT LIST HEADS-UP: Robin Deeter And Damian C. King’s PROJECT CHILD: ORIGINS
Writer and director Robin Deeter has been hard at work in the past several months to promote a platform release for the new webseries, Project Child: Origins. The project was previously billed as a film, although time will tell if a plan for that segue is still in tow while Deeter takes exclusively to Facebook with new episodes each Wednesday through February.
The webseries is a follow-up from its 2016 predecessor, Project Child: Initiations, though Origins stands on its own in some ways. The new series is set in the world where “psi sparks” are mankind’s ultimate bargaining chip. When their sparks become tainted, it manifests an evil brood and mutates their owners into demonic creatures, leaving it to a clandestine organization of “knights” – agents trained in advanced levels of combat to take down.
One such “knight” is Derek, a highly-skilled operative within the organization. With the deaths of friends and loved ones crisis of conscience ensues for Derek as he finds himself caught between his loyalty toward the organization, and his own humanity – all while unbeknownst of the deeper and darker secrets and agendas that lie further in the rabbit hole.
There’s nothing too complex about the show, though trying to put the immediate pieces together can prove a bit confounding since not too much is explained right away and so seeing the show and sticking with all five episodes will help grasp the narrative some so as to let you know what you’re in for unless you’ve read this review.
Much of the series is filmed in low light and dark atmospheres, such are most of the costumes which bode especially nicely for Deeter’s role. Channeling a younger, Asian incarnation of Liam Neeson, Derek is as cunning and quick as he is ruthless and direct in his intentions and actions. Further scenes such as flashbacks are of help in terms of bringing depth and scope to the drama, though the saturation between both in addition to some of the more phoned-in acting from some of the cast does little to invoke emotive interest.
The rest is left up largely to key performances that build up the action where and when required. Deeter himself performs most of the stunts in addition to setting up the fight scenery with choreographer and stunt coordinator Robbie Corbett. Pip Anderson, co-starring as Brandon Stone, gets to stretch himself out in addition to a few other players opposite Deeter throughout the series.
With much of the screentime attributed to the role of Derek and others that are central to his development, the show still has the villain end of things to unravel. Daniel Lujan who plays corporate figure, Mitchell, a.k.a. Knight Commander is one of the show’s several shrouded antagonists we briefly acquaint ourselves with along with fellow producer/director Damian C. King who plays the masked Ikol.
Project Child: Origins serves up a worthy serial appetizer for a broader narrative with some impressive visual ornamentations and consistent action that thrills enough to fill the void. Not all questions get answered this time around, but if you’re not too ahead of yourself, the series will be plenty to endulge in until the second season releases sometime next year should it go before cameras later this year as planned.

ELEMENTAL: An Interview With Actor, Writer, Fight Choreographer And Filmmaker John Soares
I have to say, it’s been pretty exciting going into the Fall season as I’m looking toward meeting and greeting some great people. In that time, I’ve had the privilege of reviewing some pretty good screeners, one of which recently brought me into the throes of actor, filmmaker and fight choreographer John Soares.

CCBFF 2015: Kiai-Kick Debut Series, CORNERED, Hits The Fest Circuit In Austin Next Month!
It’s always a good thing to see independent action cinema make festival moves. Things like this gain exposure and some of these do take quite a bit of effort and waiting, it’s a huge payoff for giving original content an extra pair of eyes. Exposure and other prospects come into play and hopefully that will mean great things for debut filmmaker and Kiai-Kick founder and editor Michael S. Moore with his latest webseries, Cornered.
The series, starring actor, martial artist and stuntman Donald Brooks Jr. has already taken off on social media via Vimeo as of the top of June. Now, word via press release indicates the series will be making its way to the Capital City Black Film Festival next month. The episodes are tentatively offline for this reason, so it would be in your best interest to follow the fan page on Facebook for further information. Otherwise, read the press release below from Thursday!
Austin,TX – July 23, 2015 –Kiai-Kick Films announced today that its martial arts action short film Cornered has been invited to the third annual Capital City Black Film Festival (CCBFF), an Austin, Texas-based organization dedicated to films written or directed and produced by Black filmmakers, films with Black actors in principle roles or that are about Black characters, subject matter or issues related to the Black community.
“Cornered” is a martial arts 90’s style actioner about Austin super cop Adam Matrix, who finds himself running a gauntlet of lethal fighters in order to save a young woman and keep a super weapon out of the hands of Texas underworld boss Kellogg Deveroux.
Cornered is among 60 films that will be shown throughout the three-day festival that includes networking, panel discussions, workshops, dynamic film screenings and parties.
“I am incredibly happy that Cornered will be a part of the Capital City Black Film Festival.”, says director Michael S. Moore, “Cornered features something sorely missing from action cinema: an African-American hero in a genre of film that needs more heroes of color. I was blessed to work with a talented and diverse cast and crew.”
The Festival will begin this year with Harlem Lights!, which includes a reception at 6:30 p.m. and the show starting at 7:30 p.m., August 13, 2015 at the Palmer Events Center in Austin, TX. Harlem Lights! highlights the history of Austin Area African Americans in film, will feature live music, rare photographs, film clips, local actors and will be hosted by film, television and theater veteran Julius Tennon. This historical presentation honors Austin’s own Harlem Theater and lifetime achievement awards will be given to Austin’s own Tennon, actress, comedian, music performer “Damita Jo” LeBlanc, and jazz musician Gil Askey, one of the architects of the famous Motown sound.
“This year’s films represent the rich talent we have in this country and around the world both in front of and behind to camera,” said Winston G. Williams, Executive Director of CCBFF. Tennon, Co-President and Producer of JuVee Productions, and his wife, award-winning actress Viola Davis, have been supporters of CCBFF since its inception because they felt having a Black film presence in Austin was long overdue.
“Black films are important because they give African-American artists a place to showcase their work to our community, and to the wider communities across the country,” said Tennon. “They serve to shine a light on our stories and struggles, but more importantly, our success. They show that we are a force, and what we have to say stands for something.”
Each year CCBFF has used opening night to elevate the arts. This year local, influential organizations are adding to the prestige, including partnerships with the Austin History Center, the Texas Preservation of Black History Project and the African American Cultural Heritage District. After a tremendous inaugural year in September 2013 and experiencing unexpected growth in 2014, CCBFF continues to grow, going from two to five screens with a diverse slate of feature films, documentary/feature films, short films, documentary/short films and music videos. The film ratings will range from G through the maximum of R.

Matthew Bennett And Sasha Moric Discuss New Webseries, THE TERMINAL
Moric: I agree with Matt wholeheartedly on his references. He really hit the nail on the head. Also, we want viewers to know that in no way do we want to try and imitate the application of these aesthetics. My goal, and I think Matt would agree, is to create a world and a style that has not been done before. But one thing is true, though: The character arcs and human stories of great dramas like Breaking Bad and House Of Cards are something we want to have in our series. If we can successfully combine great action with amazing characters set in a future world I feel we will have a true winner.

A New Threat Looms In The New Second Season Teaser For BLACK: THE SERIES
Filmmaker Frank T. Ziede had a stellar first run last year with season one of his independently-funded online action series, Black, starring 22-year veteran and former Navy SEAL, actor Mikal Vega (Transformers: Age Of Extinction, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as the leader of a special-ops team created in response to a terrorist attack on American soil.
Since then, the success of season one led to a season two greenlight with much more potential to present a story greater in depth, size and scale to up the ante, and thanks to another victorious fundraiser back in March, Ziede and his team plan to do just that. Of course, what this means is a threat greater than just a few rotten apples. That’s right. Our heroes will now be dealing with a horde of high-level mercenaries led by a criminal cyberterrorism organization aimed at targeting the world’s financial markets from within the U.S..
Needless to say, the stakes are higher as the explosive action and intrigue ensues when the new season debuts early next year!
Vega will be joined by a mix of new and returning cast members that include actors Daniel Betances and John T. Woods, actor and U.S. Army Ranger Hall Of Famer Howard “Mad Max” Mullen, former recon Marine Andre Jackson, former U.S. Navy SEAL Mark Golden, and actor Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa to name a few. Director R.L. Scott Announces Special Ops Series Pilot, OPTION ZERO
Filmmaker R.L. Scott is proudly announcing his latest shortfilm, one in a handful of projects currently in development for his indie platform, Shadow Motion Pictures. Newly wrapping just this week after a two-month shooting schedule, post-production is officially underway for Option Zero, a half-hour pilot for a hopeful action packed series surrounding a special ops team tasked with taking down high-ranking members of the Russian mob.
Actor Adolfo “Shabba Doo” Quinones (Breakin, Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo) plays the special ops team leader in charge of the mission. Also joining are actors Chris Conrad (Criminal Minds), Christian Howard (Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, Green Street 3) and Eliver Ling (Deadliest Warrior), and actress Amy Johnston (Raze). Scott is producing the pilot with a script by Ling who is also executive producing, with Alfred Hsing (Dragon Blade) serving as the pilot’s action coordinator.
Scott is best known for his 2008 action feature, Champion Road and its 2010 sequel, in addition to several original webseries projects including Kill Point and Fixer. He’s proven to have an effective approach to combining intense drama with electrifying action on his projects, an approach he guarantees will also showcase just the right balance between the two, with even more prolific martial arts action involving Howard and other key actors.
The director also has a few other feature films and series projects in store, including upcoming crime thriller, Call Me King now poised for a hopeful early 2015 release, and the current development of a slate of One-Shot episodes leading into the live-action production of the superhero property, The Almighty Street Team.
The news is still early but we may learn more between now and the top of the new year, so watch out for more news ahead.
