There are two guarantees in life: one is that we’ll all one day fall off this mortal coil and the other is that we will get at least three shark movies a year. Xavier Gens (Farang, Gangs of New York) is the newest director to tackle aquatic predators and it looks like this one will please genre fans. Starring Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) and Nassim Lyes (Farang), UNDER PARIS focuses on a deadly shark swimming the rivers of Paris during the World Triathlon Championships (how convenient!). Bejo plays Sophia, a scientist, who must team up with a local activist and the Seine River Police Commander to combat the finned, French fiend. Under Paris hits Netflix on June 5th. Check out the trailer and poster below!
It was last summer when “Gangs Of London” cohort Xavier Gens’ newest action adventure thriller, Farang, enjoyed its Fantasia Festival world premiere as Mayhem!. Having since been acquired by IFC Films and garnering a slew of enough buzz quotes to rival the levels of violence and spectacle being touted since its French rollout over the summer, we now have an official trailer which you can view below ahead of its theatrical and On-Demand U.S. release on January 5. A martial artist and ex-con Sam (Nassim Lyes) starts a new life in Thailand to escape a local gang lord, but a kidnapped family member sucks him back into the underworld he’d left behind in this propulsive action spectacle. I’m jelly of anyone who’s seen this film already. At any rate, that release date is just after my birthday so maybe I’ll finally get to treat myself to a nice night out […]
Just ahead of its upcoming premiere at Fantasia in Montreal, Xavier Gens’ Mayhem! is on deck to release in 2024 from IFC Films. The film stars Nassim Lyes along with Olivier Gourmet, Loryn Nounay, Vithaya Pansringarm and Sahajak Boonthanakit, from a script by Magali Rossitto, Guillaume Lemans and Gens. Here are the programming notes via the fest’s Matthew Kiernan: Sam (Nassim Lyes) is a man without freedom. With a few months left on his prison sentence, the amateur boxer enters a work furlough program that allows him to taste the freedom to come. But that freedom proves elusive and a tragic event forces Sam to flee to Thailand, where years later he believes he’s found it with a loving wife (Loryn Nounay) and daughter. They hope to build a new life on a beachfront property, but ruthless local gangster Narong (Olivier Gourmet) stands in their way. In order to obtain […]
I’m guilty of hyping a lot of things, especially in reactionary form. Also, I particularly enjoy being right about these things, and so when I see the first official trailer for Xavier Gens’ latest feature action thriller, Farang given my previous post, I can sit comfortably in the notion that my friend Monsieur Ambroisine was likely onto something. The same can invariably be said for the good, kind folks at Fantasia Festival who will be lending Gens’s new movie World Premiere status this July under its international titling, Mayhem!. The film, featuring French-Algerian actor and martial artist Nassim Lyes and action sequences by Gangs Of London vet Jude Poyer, will release in France on June 28, and was also included in the first wave of titles announced by Fantasia a few weeks ago. Here’s how they pitched it: XAVIER GENS BRINGS SHATTERING FISTFULS OF MAYHEM! Xavier Gens (FRONTIER(S), GANGS OF […]
If you’re curious any as to what Xavier Gens has been up to since Gangs Of London and Netflix series Mortel, of course there’s The Guns Of Christmas Past which is inbound with Liev Schreiber up to star. In the meantime, you have Farang, which imaginably slipped past the radar of anyone (and I mean yours truly) who isn’t regularly exposed to French media. Welp, glad I caught it this time, and with a few stills and a little something extra to boot. These were actually made public a few weeks ago too, and present a look at actor Nassim Lyes who stars in the role of a boxer and father on the run from his troubled past, and for a role of this kind, his background in MMA aptly suits him. Check out the images in the gallery below! Sam is a professional boxer about to be released from […]
GANGS OF LONDON, the hit television series from Sky and AMC+, has been rightfully praised for setting a new high watermark for cinematic-style action and mayhem on the small screen. The bulk of that praise has gone to the series creator, writer/director Gareth Evans (THE RAID). This tale of the violent power struggle that occurs when one of the heads of the London underworld is mysteriously gunned down was not solely shepherded through production by Evans though. He shared directing duties equally on the series with two other men, one of those two was French filmmaker Xavier Gens (COLD SKIN). Gens had the unenviable task of directing the three late-season episodes leading up to the season one finale that not only had to bring into focus all of the winding narrative plot threads setup by the earlier episodes, by Evans and fellow series director Corin Hardy (THE HALLOWS), but also […]
The bell has officially rung as of Wednesday for Sky Original series, Gangs Of London. The series marks the latest foray for filmmaker Gareth Evans (Apostle) since his cult ascension among the action fandom proliferating then-burgeoning star Iko Uwais ten years ago. Evans is rejoined by noted cinematographer Matt Flannery, both who created the nine-part action drama which centers on a young crime org heir who sets out to restore order among the gangs while hunting his father’s mysterious killer. Joe Cole stars along with Sope Dirisu, Colm Meaney, Lucian Msamati and Michelle Fairley. Gangs Of London was also directed by Evans next to Xavier Gens and Corin Hardy, and was produced by Pulse Films in association with Sister. A release date remains pending while Sky is rolling out an official trailer for the action-packed series that shows in lucid, brutal fashion that Evans hasn’t lost his knack for delivering […]
