It was pretty much anyone’s guess nine years ago whether or not Carl Rinsch’s Lord Of The Rings-esque take on the classic tale of the 47 Ronin was going to get a sequel of any kind, as big as the aspirations (and budget) were for Universal’s 2013 box office flop. Suffice it to say that some jaws dropped when the trades reported such a follow-up to be directed by actor Ron Yuan who had long begun racking up his film credits behind the lens and with direct-to-disc/streaming releases becoming the more suitable business model for studios looking to capitalize on residual film fandom. Thus, we have Universal’s 1440 shingle joined by Netflix in rolling out Blade Of The 47 Ronin, the second chapter which is set 300 years after the events of the first film and is set in none other than Budapest, which is where Rinsch’s installment was partly […]
When Stephen Ford isn’t acting, he’s filmmaking. Just as he has with his latest short, Kiru, attributed to hit video game, “Ghost Of Tsushima”, it’s billed as a love letter to legendary authors like Kurosawa, Leone and Morricone and was just released on the Ascender channel on YouTube only a few days ago. The project was originally crowdfunded via kickstarter and shot last year with the intention of debuting it last August to coincide with the director’s cut launch of the Sucker Punch-developed game. Actor Yoshi Sudarso leads the vengeful ronin epic opposite Josh Han, James Tang, Manny Shih, Earl Baylon and Zedrick Restauro, and Hana Wu. Ford penned the short with story consultant Mari Takahashi, and with Sudarso laying out the action choreo. Check it out above, and peep the poster below, along with a fan poster created by Nuno Sarnadas which you can view here.
Bali-born writer/director Soma Helmi is at the forefront of a new hopeful step toward bringing supernatural thrills to AAPI audiences following the production of her latest short, The Angkasa Legacy. The official trailer launched on Thursday which you can view above, as the short proof-of-concept readies its online release following a yearlong effort with crowdfunding last summer, and post-production currently underway. Josh, a young man still recovering from his sister’s death, reluctantly joins a weekend getaway at his friend Michelle’s house. The weekend unravels awkwardly as Josh navigates his secret feelings for Michelle and her possessive boyfriend, Mike. To make matters worse, at night, a strange Indonesian woman visits him in his dreams, forcing Josh to question his own grip on reality. It all comes to a head when Josh finds Michelle floating face down in the pool and can’t resuscitate her. Overwhelmed with the loss of his unrequited love, […]
Actor, filmmaker and stunt professional Aaron Toney revealed two new images over the weekend for his upcoming independently-produced pilot, Project H, which you can view in the captioned images above. Toney made the reveal in a new Indiegogo campaign launched several days ago to help crowdfund the pilot’s post-production, after completing a five-day production slate spanning a month from mid-March. The campaign ultimately achieved its goal of $2000, having since broken past the $3600 mark (as of this article) which could potentially be used as funds toward another episode or to provide means to trek the concept to various marketplaces virtually, and help him and his team expand his reach. An official statement has not yet been made. Project H is based on Toney’s viral action-packed short, Throne, which he shot in 2014 with over two dozen performers, from a concept he drew together with fellow creatives Jason Sweat and […]
In an announcement from actor, director and stunt professional Aaron Toney sent to us on Tuesday, Toney revealed the following: “Production has officially kicked off with Aaron Toney and his entertainment company, Halvon Corporation Entertainment. The crew is set to work for three days in the Mojave desert region on the new pilot for Halvon Corps first show “Project H”. Billed as a pilot for a planned series, Project H stems from Toney’s martial arts fantasy-infused indie short, Throne, born from the like minds of Toney along with Toney, Jason Sweat, and Linda Jewell. The concept remained in quiet evolution ever since then, while Toney continued working stunts, most recently retiring the Falcon costume after doubling Anthony Mackie’s character on Falcon And The Winter Soldier, which is now airing on Disney+. Toney revived the project in an official crowdfunding campaign back in December, hailing Project H as the official launchpad for Halvon […]
Actor Yoshi Sudarso is the first official casting addition to Project H, a new and independent series endeavor from actor, stunt performer and filmmaker Aaron Toney. The series, which hails from the newly-launched Halvon Corp. Entertainment and Global Forge Studios, signals the newest evolution of Throne, an action-packed and SFX-infused proof-of-concept shot in 2014 with Toney on both sides of the lens. “This project is coming from the hearts of people who love the action genre, so you can bet there’s gonna be a lot of action in this.” says Sudarso in the announcement video published on Monday. “…I’m really excited to introduce to you guys, my character. We’ve been building it for quite some time now, maybe a few months at least and – the weapons he gets to use and the powers that he has – I’m trying not to give it away too much, but I’m really […]
Sky Wolves (locally titled Serigala Langit) is the name of director Rika Wijaya’s new miltary action drama which sees Deva Mahendra heading a cast that includes former Power Rangers actor Yoshi Sudarso, actresses Bunga Jelitha and Cristina Surya, and actors Dion Sidik and Donny Damara. The centers on an elite air force pilot and the drama that ensues in his own personal life, as well as during a harrowing mission to save humanitarian agents from captivity in an enemy country. The film opens in Indonesian cinemas on April 2, and we have an official trailer you can check out above!
I can honestly say that one thing I wasn’t looking forward to doing this weekend, among other things, was fighting a nasty cold and fever. Alas, here we are. The Hit List is always a welcome labor and thus, we begin with a playlist filled to the brim with stunt demo and training reels from today’s talents: Shawn Bernal, Natascha Hopkins, Eric Miyashiki, Luke Davis, Justin Carney, Patrick Chu, Alejandro Gil, Todd Ryan Jones, Joshua Romeo, Mike Marin, LJ LaVecchia, Linda Kessler, Diandra Stoddard, Brittany Battle, Dani Parker, Cheryl Lewis, Gabriel Lewis, Lexter Santana, Jason Elwood Hanna, Bridgette Michelle, Hugh O’Brien and Jodi Stecyk. As far as trailers go, the only one on my radar hails from Darren Holmquist whose latest short, Phone It In, is set for a March 28 big screen premiere for the Indie Shorts Showcase at the Laemmle in Claremont, CA. Director Bao Tran is officially launching his second crowdfunder to begin shooting kung fu action comedy drama, THE PAPER TIGERS early next year!
Debut director Mike Wiluan’s new film, Buffalo Boys, comes at a great time with the current appreciation that Asian film productions have accrued. Buffalo Boys feels like something made directly for a crowd much larger than folks keen on Asian niche films and especially given the rollicking look it has for what looks to be a splashy, fun and exciting western film of its kind. It’s got Ario Bayu and Yoshi Sudarso who play brothers on an epic mission of vengeance, one that finds them fighting for a small Indonesian village oppressed by Dutch colonial rule. The teaser and trailer footage have all proven exciting with hints of slick, energizing gunbattles and fight action that’ll surely have genre fans drooling as the weeks and months pass for a hopefully sooner wider release. This week, Screenplay Films delivers all that and just a touch more with a second full and official […]
It’s a rousing time for actor Yoshi Sudarso who will be getting a little screentime of his own for the Frontières Proof Of Concept showcase at Cannes for Bao Tran’s kung fu feature, The Paper Tigers. In the meantime, his biggest score by far in his career is set to arrive later this year in a debut role next to actor Ario Bayu for period Western actioner, Buffalo Boys, from debut director Mike Wiluan. Sudarso, best known for his role in hit series, Power Rangers: Dino Charge, and Bayu who also stars in Java Heat with Mickey Rourke, lead the narrative for Wiluan’s new film as two brothers on a mission of vengeance for their father’s death against corrupt Dutch colonialists in the 1800s. Wiluan penned the script along with screenwriter Raymond Lee with the addition of action sequences to boot courtesy of Kazu Patrick Tang of Hard Target 2 fame. […]
As 2017 came to a close, the new year felt ripe in its approach with the number of projects – particularly coming out of Southeast Asia – that were slated to arrive at forthcoming dates. It all stems from the kind of residual energy and excitement that has been percolating since Gareth Huw Evans put an unknown in the spotlight with Iko Uwais in Merantau, just several years before an already world-scale famous Tony Jaa would segue into more flexible auspices of management ahead of Furious 7, among other regional entities such as in Singapore, India, the Philippines, Cambodia and the like. It’s not without its show of struggle though, given the well-documented hurdles faced by aspiring artists toward the action genre in most of these territories – a reminder that the renaissance we’re now seeing has been, a continues to be one that is long and hard fought for. […]
Mike Wiluan’s period Western actioner, Buffalo Boys is off to a roaring start this week with the unveiling our first official teaser. Wiluan, best known for producing ‘Mo Bros thrillers Macabre, Headshot and Liam O’Donnell’s upcoming Beyond Skyline, makes his directorial debut on the Indonesia-Singapore co-production which joins Java Heat co-star Ario Bayu with Power Rangers: Dino Charge and Hyperforce star, actor and martial artist Yoshi Sudarso making his own big screen debut. Wiluan penned the script with Raymond Lee which centers on Bayu and Sudarso in the respective roles of Jamar and Suwo, two brothers of Javanese descent who set out on a mission of vengeance for their father’s death against corrupt Dutch colonialists in the 1800s. Rounding out the cast is a shared talent pool listing actress Pevita Pearce, Headshot co-stars Sunny Pang and Zack Lee, The Raid 2 co-stars Tio Pakusadewo, Donny Alamsyah and Mike Lucock among the cast for a release […]
