Paired once more with screenwriter Christine To, director Roy Chow’s long-awaited crime thriller adaptation, The Great Detective, was last filmed in 2016 prior to a campaign that should have seen a release this past July – it’s sort of a pattern noticeable among a lot of Chinese productions that will hopefully see the light of day come next year.
At long last however, the latest official trailer arrived this week signaling the latest iteration of Huo Sang Detective Stories by Cheng Xiaoqing. Han Geng stars in the title role with up-and-comer Yin Zheng, actor Zhou Xiaodong and actress Zhang Huiwen lining up the new pic with locations filmed in Prague and Shanghai.
Crime and fantasy collide when a renowned private detective and his loyal assistant are drawn into the lavish and dangerous underbelly of a timeless Chinese metropolis.
The film releases officially on January 18 in China, and thus promising the sort of youthful coolness that Chow aptly applies in his work. This one looks quite fitting for its target audience, and that we get some action to stimulate the eyes some makes this one worth looking toward.
Lionsgate is repping this one internationally so stay tuned for more updates.
