Lace up your gloves, fight fans! We have been tracking Amazon’s upcoming biographical boxing drama series since it was first greenlit, and the wait is officially coming to an end. Over the weekend at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans, showrunner Ben Watkins (Cross) and lead actor Jaalen Best took center stage to drop the first official teaser trailer and lock down a worldwide premiere date.
Mark your calendars: The Greatest is scheduled to hit Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, November 4, 2026!
Ali fans have experienced his legendary fights—such as the Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila—countless times. However, The Greatest is swinging for something entirely different. Backed directly by Ali’s widow, Lonnie Ali, this 8-episode limited series is the very first authorized scripted drama about the boxing icon’s life.
Instead of jumping straight into his global fame, Season 1 delivers an intimate coming-of-age story. It locks its focus on a specific, hyper-volatile four-year window: starting with his 1960 gold medal victory at the Rome Olympics as Cassius Clay, and driving straight through to his massive 1964 upset victory over the terrifying Sonny Liston. Showrunner Ben Watkins has promised that the series is meticulously designed to uncover the personal struggles, relationships, and raw human elements that “weren’t in the documentaries.
” We are going to see the actual man behind the myth—as a son, a brother, and a burgeoning champion navigating a turbulent era.
If you need any more proof that the fight choreography and dramatic pacing are going to pack a serious punch, look no further than the executive producer chair: Michael B. Jordan is steering the ship via his Outlier Society banner. Having lived in the ring for the Creed franchise, Jordan knows exactly how to capture the visceral, bone-crunching reality of professional boxing. This promises a much more serious, grounded, and less cartoonish tone than the 2001 biopic starring Will Smith under the direction of Michael Mann.
The casting lineup looks absolutely spectacular for recreating the 1960s boxing landscape:
Jaalen Best (All American: Homecoming) stepping into the ring as the legendary Cassius Clay. Amin Joseph (Snowfall) as his formidable rival, the powerhouse Sonny Liston. Michael Ealy portraying the iconic civil rights leader Malcolm X. Omari Hardwick and Dana Gourrier as Ali’s parents, Cassius Sr. and Odessa Clay. Giovanni Ribisi stepping into the corner as legendary trainer Angelo Dundee.
Mark your calendars: The Greatest is scheduled to hit Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, November 4, 2026!
