THE HUNSTMAN: Casting Announced For New Psych Thriller From ‘Out Of Exile’ Director
Principal photography is scheduled for May 22 in Oklahoma for psychological thriller, The Huntsman. Kyle Kauwika Harris (Out of Exile) is directing Steven Jon Whritner’s adaptation of award-winning author Judith Sanders’ novel of the same name.
Cast includes Garret Dillahunt (Where the Crawdads Sing, Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead), Elizabeth Mitchell (The Purge: Election Year, Netflix’s “Outer Banks”), Shawn Ashmore (X-Men movie franchise, ABC’s “The Rookie”), and Jessy Schram (Unstoppable, NBC’s “Chicago Med”).
The Huntsman centers on a repressed ICU nurse (Ashmore) volunteering as a reader for a recovering coma patient (Dillahunt), the prime suspect in the savage murders of six young women in a small southwestern town. The suspect’s wife (Mitchell), refusing to believe that her husband is the killer, struggles with the mounting complexities of the investigation. With a dedicated detective (Schram) trying to solve the mystery before more bodies turn up, numerous other suspects take the case on a spiraling journey.
The Huntsman is fully financed by Frank Malinoski (The Huntsman Film, LLC) and produced by Plymouth Rock Entertainment’s Whritner (“Jury Duty,” “Repo Men: Stealing for a Living”) and SafeHouse Films’ Jacob Ryan Snovel (Agnes, upcoming film Reverence), alongside Nicholas Clement (Out of Exile, upcoming film Reverence), and Maddison Bullock (Ice: The Movie, upcoming film Anywhere). The film is exec produced by Dillahunt, Sanders, and Malinoski.
Of Hawaiian descent and a member of the Choctaw Nation, Harris is known for his 2017 Emmy winning documentary I Stand: The Guardians of the Water, which spotlighted the Standing Rock Sioux Nation’s fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline. He made his theatrical debut with the 2022 crime thriller, Out of Exile, distributed by Saban Films and Paramount Pictures.
“I’m excited to start shooting this dark and atmospheric story. We live in a world where outward appearances are oftentimes deceiving, and one of the many intriguing aspects about this project was how the script addresses inner and outer identity, and the reasons why someone would be driven to kill,” said Harris. “I’m drawn to material that takes the audience to the narrative edge, and with The Huntsman, we have a film that will shake the viewer up.”
”From Sanders’ gripping novel comes an amazing script by Whritner, which, in the hands of our visionary director and a brilliantly talented cast, will come a film that should engage, surprise and thrill the minds and hearts of adult audiences,” added Malinoski.
Mark Rutman (FX’s “Snowfall,” ABC’s “Nashville”) handled the casting for The Huntsman. Jesse M. Bookout of Franklin, Weinrib, Rudell and Vasallo, LLP serve as the film’s production counsel.
Harris is repped by Adam Kanter at Independent Artist Group, and Dawn Saltzman and Emily Rose at Mosaic in LA; Mitchell is repped by Barry McPherson at Independent Artist Group, and Ben Levine at Link Entertainment; Dillahunt is also repped by McPherson at Independent Artist Group, and Danielle Del at D2 Management; Ashmore is repped by Brett Norensberg at The Gersh Agency, and Manager Paul Nicholls at Artistry Entertainment; Schram is repped by Mitchell Gossett at Industry Entertainment.
