Director Lee Seok-hoon‘s newest action adventure feature, The Pirates, had a stellar showing at Cannes last month, having been sold to up to 15 countries including the U.S., reportedly marking the highest presale rate for a Korean period film this year. And there is doubt, its international rights holder, Lotte Entertainment, holds this as a remarkable achievement leading up to the film’s domestic theatrical release which will soon be announced.
At the onset of Joseon’s founding, envoys bringing the Emperor’s Seal of State to Joseon lose it to a big whale at sea. A bandit Sa-jung goes out to sea to catch the whale with a big reward on its head. But he soon clashes with Yeo-wol, a female captain of pirates, and unexpected adventure unfolds.
