It took a bit of time, but now we have an offiical new trailer for the upcoming October release for director Prachya Pinkaew‘s latest Thai martial arts adventure, Tom Yum Goong 2. Most netizens eager to see footage from the film were more than happy when an unofficial, dim, low-quality, company watermarked trailer was leaked online a few months ago, which may have already spoiled the surprise that awaited fans of Pinkaew’s signature style of Thai action filmmaking. Thankfully this appears not to have had a highly negative affect among most critics.
Filming for
Tom Yum Goong 2 had its share of stops and starts over the last few years, including run-ins with mother nature, returning action star
Tony Jaa‘s on-set injury and subsequent marriage to his fiancè,
in addition to action actress
Jeeja Yanin‘s pregnancy, to name a few. Needless to say, the new, OFFICIAL trailer below is a nothing short of an absolute promise that the film is well on its way to wow audiences who have waited more than enough to see
Jaa and
Yanin back in action, and together for the very first time on screen.
But even more prominently, they are also joined by high profile co-stars, returning actor
Petchtai Wongkamlao, and musician/filmmaker and kung fu cinema liaison,
RZA. And rounding out the cast are some of Thailand’s most major heavy hitters, including
Dan Chupong who fought
Jaa in the two sequels that followed the 2003 release of
Ong Bak, rising action performer
Kazu Patrick Tang who co-starred with
Yanin in the dynamic, high-flying martial arts cinema spectacle,
Raging Phoenix, and
Marrese Crump who is in the process of achieving his own greatness with the upcoming production of
Formless. And last but not least, tying the lineage together is action director
Panna Rittikrai, who designed the impressive, big scale action sequences we all have largely come to love about Thai action cinema in the last decade and beyond.
To avoid misunderstanding all this, however, is the excitement added by Jaa’s own start of international action stardom as Tom Yum Goong 2 will be a major precursor to the development and production of his next two films, A Man Will Rise and Skin Trade. Both films will see Jaa on set with blockbuster action hero Dolph Lundgren.
No complaints here people. If action is what you ordered, then stick around!
SYNOPSIS:
The sequel to “Tom Yum Goong”, Tony Jaa is the hard-hitting Kham. Kham is the last in long line of guards who once watched over the King of Thailand’s war elephants. Traditionally, only the perfect elephants could successfully help defend the throne, after his harrowing quest to retrieve the elephants, Kham returns to his village to live in peace. But for someone as good in martial arts as him, peace is but a wishful thought…
