WARRIORS: ‘Jailbreak’ Star Dara Our’s Hip-Hop Tribute To Cambodian Martial Arts Signals His Music Video Directorial Debut
The last few years have been kind of a watershed moment for Cambodian martial art, Bokator. Mark Bochsler’s 2018 documentary, Surviving Bokator, is currently one of the latest milestones in campaigning the sport to its relevancy, and it’s only been screened for select events and channels so there’s no telling when it’ll make the commercial circuit overseas.
For now though, at least we get to jam to a little something thanks to actor Dara Our, who’s popped up on occasion with filmmaker Jimmy Henderson taking the reigns with Hanuman, Jailbreak and The Prey. This time, it’s Our himself in the director’s chair for none other than music video debut, “Warriors” (or “Nak Chambang”), produced by Ream Productions and performed by hip hop artist Baly featuring Tom, and the athletes of the Cambodia Kun Bokator Federation, with action sequences by Soy Phannich.
The video’s been up since the weekend but Our has taken the mantle as well with the addition of English subtitles for its international appeal. For this, we get some cool music and great set pieces rich with luster and grit, and a welcome little entry into the genre for Our as we await his return to the screen with Jean-Paul Ly for the upcoming Jailbreak sequel. As for the song, those in attendance of next year’s 32nd SEA Games will get to jam to the martial arts anthem thanks to its official selection by the SEA Games Organising Committee’s (CAMSOC)
