BABY ASSASSINS To Make Landfall At Comic Con International This Month!

Published July 8, 2022: Director Hugo Sakamoto’s Baby Assassins is making a pit stop this month during the Kung Fu Extravaganza panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 21. That’s the day the official U.S. trailer will go live for Sakamoto’s latest action comedy, which will release exclusively on Hi-YAH! the following day before releasing on Digital, Blu-Ray and DVD on August 16. Baby Assassins is latest film from Sakamoto who scored the Jury’s Special Award at the 2022 Fantasporto Film Festival back in April, with audience favor earned from screenings at Glasgow and Fantastic Fest. The campaign is currently underway to ramp up the fifth edition of the North Bend Film Festival, which is set to launch from August 4 to August 7. Three years after the sucessful rollout of Gundala, Joko Anwar’s inaugural superhero entry of the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe now has a follow-up in Upi Avianto’s own incarnation of superheroine staple, Sri Asih, which now delivers us a spectacular first teaser featuring actress Pevita Pearce in the title role. Hailing from Screenplay Films and Bumilangit Studios for its big screen release, the trailblazing superhero property was first birthed in 1954 from creator R.A. Kosasih for Melodie Publishers, Bandung. The superheroine now makes her transition to feature film territory following the events of Gundala in which Pearce makes a brief cameo in the role. THE LEGEND & BUTTERFLY: Keishi Ohtomo’s Latest Sengoku War Drama Gets An Epic Teaser

Director Keishi Ohtomo of Rurouni Kenshin franchise fame is back with The Legend & Butterfly, starring Takuya Kimura (Blade Of The Immortal) and Haruka Ayase (Caution, Hazardous Wife: The Movie). Written by Ryota Ozawa (The Confidence Man: JP trilogy, Parasyte Part 1 & 2), the 16th century period epic tells of nefarious warlord Nobunaga Oda, his dissenting relationship with wife Nohime following their arranged marriage, and the synergy that ensued as war strategists in the face of a pending attack by Nobunaga’s rival, Imagawa Yoshimoto. The official teaser is now online following press events in the past week with teaser poster reveals as of last month, and with post-production currently underway just as Ohtomo readies to serve as competition juror this October for the 16th Tanabe Benkei Film Festival. The Legend & Butterfly opens in Japan on January 27, 2023 from Toei Company.

Fantasia 2022: Five Must-See Titles To Watch At This Year’s 26th Edition

I think the one thing I’ve had difficulty with is picking which films to select for the curtain raiser I’m posting here ahead of this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival installation. Nearly all the selections I would bet are easy picks, but I’m resigned to only a handful. Honorable mentions thusfar for me go to Sadako DX for anyone who’s anyone who’s been a fan of iconic Japanese horror in the last three decades, namely since the infamous literary character was first adapted for the screen in the 1990s. The Hulu release of Furie and The Requin helmer Le-Van Kiet’s new action adventure, The Princess, is just hours away from hitting the streaming platform in the states, and the company has just rolled out a new promo to help warm up the crowd. I won’t go into details here since the film’s lead star, Joey King, pretty much does that in the player above, but I did get to join the preliminary gang of early watchers just yesterday to buzz the new film from 20th Century Studios, and I also got to screen it this week ahead of its release, which technically means I finally managed to screen my first major studio picture for a written review. DAWN: Beware Who You Ride With In The Official Poster For The Upcoming Horror From Uncork’d

Uncork’d Entertainment has a new poster making the rounds for rideshare thriller, Dawn, which will have a trailer launching in the very near future. Directed by Nicholas Ryan and starring Jackie Moore (Pernicious) and Jared Cohn (A Stalker in the House), Dawn “tells of an unsuspecting couple that get into a rideshare only to find out that they may have to fight for their lives as the deranged driver puts them through life and death situations.” The logline finishes with “Be careful who you accept a ride from, it may be your last.” Sarah French, Michael Paré, Eric Roberts, Gigi Gustin, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Nicholas Brendon also star from a script by Ryder Doupe, Dawson Doupé, and Todd Tapper. The film will release on Digital beginning August 8 from Uncork’d Entertainment.

The 26th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival is popping off in a matter of weeks and the final round of titles has arrived to round out the line-up. The package includes a tasty row of restored genre classics to bookend contemporary titles, many of which I’ll be picking out in a future curtain raiser in the not-too-distant future. The festival also rolled out its official poster for the 26th edition as the event will mark a long-awaited return to screening titles for in-person audiences since the Covid-19 pandemic crippled the world, and effectively, any in-person festival activities that were planned for that year and the year that followed. Following reports back in May of 2019, Deadline‘s Nancy Tartaglione is reaffirming the news on the pending Don Lee and Sylvester Stallone collab, a remake of Lee Won-tae’s hit 2019 action crime thriller, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. The original film was released in South Korea by Kiwi Media Group and shortly after by Well Go USA in the states following its Fantasia Festival premiere (read our review). Joined by Kim Moo-yul and Kim Sung-kyu, Lee starred as a gangster who, after becoming the sole survivor among a raft of murdered crimebosses, reluctantly pairs up with a dogmatic cop who despises gangsters, to take the serial killer down. The official trailer is now up for Kim Han-min’s forthcoming prequel, Hansan: Emergence Of Dragon; Hansan: Rising Dragon is the affirmed title for what is expected to roll out from Well Go USA, as one of five Korean titles acquired by the company for North America as of last week’s Deadline report.
