Netflix Japan Festival 2021 unveiled concept art for its upcoming feature adaptation of Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise’s hit mecha/sci-fi anime franchise, Gundam, which you can view above. Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) is directing from a script by Brian K. Vaughan, with Mary Parent, Cale Boyter and Naohiro Ogata producing, and with Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Vaughan exec producing alongside Makoto Asanuma. The story for the live-action film version of Gundam is being kept under wraps but the original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Netflix’s Live-Action YU YU HAKUSHO Series Announced For December 2023

Netflix Japan Festival 2021 is off to the races this week with a slew of ambitious new projects well on the way from here through the next few years. In doing so with announcements of projects such as a second season of Alice In Borderland, a second installment of animated series Tiger & Bunny, Beat Takeshi biopic Asakusa Kid and more, they’ve confirmed their commitment to a live-action Yu Yu Hakusho series with a premiere date set for December 2023. Releasing just in time for Diwali is the long-awaited Bollywood blockbuster, Sooryavanshi, the latest ambitious step in director Rohit Shetty’s “Cop Universe” which began with 2011 remake, Singham. Joining actors Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh and actress Katrina Kaif on screen, the film releases this week on November 5 in theaters on 1,300 screens in 66 countries, including North America from Reliance Entertainment, bookending a long delay held over from the film’s prior March 2020 date. Ever had one of those days where you were sifting through Netflix and surely enough you came across something you were bound to be interested in only before you kept scrolling? Yeah…me too. Only, I can affirm you that this won’t be the case with Kan Eguchi’s 2019 action comedy adaptation, The Fable, which I reviewed that year for its NYAFF premiere. The same goes for its most recent sequel which I also reviewed and well… the rest is history. RRR Teaser Signals The Latest Post-Pandemic Janaury 2022 Epic From S.S. Rajamouli

It’s been well over three years since the wheels began turning for the production of director S.S. Rajamouli’s latest major film effort, RRR. The famed Baahubali helmer crafted the film with screenwriter K. V. Vijayendra Prasad for a cast led by actors N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan with plans initially to release the film last summer only to realize its forthwith battle with a lingering pandemic that infamously put the global film industry at a standstill. Thankfully though, production has stood the test of time and has since contended with the hurdles it needed to, with Lyca Productions stamping a January 7, 2022 release date to its current promotional campaign which now includes a fully-fledged and brief teaser trailer to sample some of Rajamouli’s epic 1920-set revolutionary tale. Also starring are Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, and Ray Stevenson.

News fresh from the AFM ticker tape brings word of the casting of Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (The Guilty, Prisoners, Source Code, Jarhead) for The Gentlemen helmer Guy Ritchie’s latest action-thriller, The Interpreter. Filming is set to commence on January 10, 2022, on location in Spain, with Ritchie directing from a script he co-wrote with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. In The Interpreter, Gyllenhaal will play Sergeant John Kinley, on his last tour of duty and teamed with Ahmed, a local interpreter, to survey the region. How’s this for ambitious? Legendary filmmaker John Woo is readying a Hollywood comeback with Silent Night, a literally dialogue-free action thriller starring Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad). Deadline‘s AFM-attentive Mike Fleming Jr. broke the news and revealed the following: Sources tell Deadline the story is basic, as a normal father heads into the underworld to avenge his young son’s death. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christian Mercuri and Lori Tilkin are reportedly producing with Capstone’s Ruzanna Kegeyan overseeing the project with Joe Gatta. As Fleming Jr. reports, Capstone is in negotiations to finance. WYRMWOOD: APOCALYPSE Teaser Reveals More Undead Hell!

Currently making the festival rounds is horror franchise continuation, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse from Kiah Roache-Turner and Tristan Roache-Turner. Arclight is repping the film internationally just as an official teaser has since begun making the rounds ahead of its Brisbane premiere this weekend. A sequel to the 2015 cult hit Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse is post- apocalyptic zombie film that follows soldier Rhys on an arc of redemption as he turns against his evil bosses and joins forces with a group of rebel survivors to help rescue a girl who might hold the cure to the virus. A sci-fi, action, horror film packed with zombies. The film also has a bit of key art which you can view below courtesy of creator Jefferton James. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse stars Luke McKenzie, Jay Gallagher, Bianca Bradey, Jake Ryan, Tasia Zalar and Shantae Barnes Cowan.

I have to say, it’s been naturally hard as hell to keep up with some of the animated materials coming out of China. For this, it’s always great seeing Well Go USA maintaining as it has, having established itself so far with films like Nezha and Jiang Ziya, granted of course what with so many other projects rolling out over the years. One such IP stands with The Monkey King lore in all its forms, including director Wang Yun Fei (4-film Yugo & Lala franchise), whose The Monkey King: Reborn is now set in stone for a Digital, Blu-ray & DVD release December 7, with an all-new English Dub. The official U.S. trailer is up above along with key art below.

In the meantime, the official trailer for his latest indie sci-fi revenge feature, Rupture, is finally here following the teaser a few months back, with actor/martial artist Mark Strange (Redcon-1, Ip Man 4) starring. ‘Raven, a recently freed man from prison must confront the people who put him inside. However, revenge is not always the answer, redemption is.’ Also starring are David Lamont, Sean Cronin, James Bryhan, Nick Khan and Shally Amanda. Frustratingly, there’s quite a bit I’ve had to leave out of this post, but what I can report is that stunt performer and indepedent filmmaker Kyle Wong (Vendetta, The Line) is in longstanding development on a new comedic action horror thriller as of last year. That’s the good news, although the bad news does take some sifting, so bear with me. Plot details on the project are unknown, but things began evolving last summer with Wong in preliminary discussions about the project with a partner based in the U.S. (more on this person later). Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are going back to Arrakis to finish out director Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious revisal of the sci-fi classic saga, Dune, affirming fans with an October 2023 release date.
