Chinese/German actor and martial artist Max Huang is coveting the role of warrior monk, Kung Lao, for Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat, which began filming in South Australia on Monday from New Line Cinema. The Award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker is making his feature debut based on the long-running hit game franchise from a script by Greg Russo. WARIGAMI: Eddie Kim’s New Fantasy Martial Arts Series Debuts This Week!

Folks already subscribed to CW Seed in North America will be in good company with the two-hour premiere of Warigami, from writer Andrew Allen and director Jason Lapeyre. The series, featuring Emily Piggford and Kai Bradbury, booked a run in Canada earlier on after breaking news over the summer and will now commence its debut on Sunday night on the CW Network before streaming exclusively on the CW Seed app. Wendy Ohata (Piggford) has just made three startling realizations: One, she has a twin brother; two, she’s a kami-jin – a descendent of an ancient Japanese people who can turn paper into deadly weapons; and three, there’s a kami-jin warrior hunting her down for reasons she doesn’t understand. It was last week when Well Go USA publicly acquired the rights to Andrew Lau’s true survival tale, The Captain. That film is now poised for a select release beginning October 4 and us folks here in the states now have a trailer to help get settled. Hanyu Zhang leads the way for what is being billed as “Lau’s cinematic portrayal of the most miraculous emergency landing in the contemporary history of Chinese aviation”. The Captain is based on an incident that occurred on a Monday morning in May 2018 when a Sichuan Airlines flight from Chongqing to Lhasa spiraled into chaos after the windshiled cockpit collapsed, leaving the occupants to endure low pressure at high altitudes over the Tibetan Plateau as Captain Liu Chuanjian took charge and fought through fearsome odds to bring everyone home. LITTLE MONSTERS: Lupita Nyong’o Goes To Town On The Undead In The New Trailer

Lupita Nyong’o, Alexander England and Josh Gad lead the charge in writer/director Abe Forsythe’s latest horror comedy, Little Monsters. Hat tip to Deadline‘s post with assets to the new Hulu orginal which opens on the streamer on October 11 following a one-night theatrical outing on October 8. Dave (England) is a washed-up musician who volunteers to chaperone his nephew’s kindergarten trip after taking a shine to the plucky schoolteacher, Miss Caroline (Nyong’o). His intentions are complicated by the presence of Teddy McGiggle, a world-famous Wigglesque child entertainer and competitor for Caroline’s affections. One thing none of them bargained for, however, is a sudden zombie outbreak; now Dave and Miss Caroline must protect the children. DARK ARMY: Universal Taps Paul Feig To Direct Driven Thriller Tied To Studio’s Classic Monsters Legacy

I’m still pining for a Spy sequel, but director Paul Feig apparently has other plans, and with none other than Universal Pictures for a new project called Dark Army. Feig will direct from his own script – based on an from an original idea, and will produce from his Feigco banner with Laura Fischer at Universal. Plot details are scant though word from Deadline‘s Mike Fleming Jr. states the film will have a connective tissue to the studios’s Classic Monsters legacy, much like Upgrade helmer Leigh Whannell’s upcoming The Invisible Man. Universal’s ambitious attempt at a Dark Universe fell flat with Tom Cruise’s 2017 starrer, The Mummy. I’d like to think that one day I’ll muster the bravery required to commence finally digesting the epic phenomenon that is One Piece. It’s the animated series that never died after showing up on American shores back in 2004 from 4Kids Entertainment having crossed the pond from Japan’s own 1999 rollout from Toei Animation.
