Netflix’s rollout of Marvel shows – Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage were all very exceptional shows. Despite their own sets of minimal technical flaws, all three programs delivered principal characters that fans could otherwise relate to on many levels, and with some neat action scenes to boot. And then came Iron Fist, a series whereby somewhere along the line, frankly, somebody dropped the ball. Normally when I screen an independently-produced film, I offer as much of a curve as I possibly can while reviewing. I’m a regular advocate of DIY filmmaking for creatives who have observed their own respective talents and strive to build themselves and bring good storytelling and equally fierce screenfighting to the fray in their projects. Tim Story’s SON OF SHAFT Casts Jesse T. Usher For The Lead; Jackson, Roundtree Returning

New Line Cinema is still moving forward with Tim Story’s installment of the iconic 1970’s action franchise vehicle, Shaft, and the word now is that its found its star in Independence Day: Resurgence actor Jesse T. Usher. Also of note is the return of star of John Singleton’s 2000 Shaft reboot, actor Samuel L. Jackson, along with that of actor Richard Roundtree who cameoed in the movie. Titled Son Of Shaft, Davis Entertainment’s own John Davis is producing the film along with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris whose script will see Usher as the once estranged son of Jackson’s character, an FBI agent and a cyber expert forced to reluctantly pair up with his father, ensuing a clash between the old school and new school ways of crimefighting. Apart from that, all one needs to know is that the reactions have all but largely fared well by those who’ve managed to spy an eye on the spooky live-action fantasy horror treatment of Araki Hirohiko’s longstanding anime about a high school student’s journey of self-discovery amid epic battles with “stand users” that soon start to affect the quiet town of Morioh. Just as fans have hoped, it became clearer on Thursday evening that filmmaker Patty Jenkins was more than qualified to return to the director’s chair for the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel. With payday kinks still being worked on, reports finally came in more than two and a half months after the film’s principal release that the acclaimed Monster helmer was in final talks to return for the second film reprising actress Gal Gadot in the title role once more. Director Kim Jee-Woon’s 2005 action drama, A Bittersweet Life, certainly lended one of the most brutal and memorable titles Korean cinema had to offer near the start of the millenium with actor Lee Byung-Hun front and center. Fast forward to present day where Twentieth Century Fox is poised to advance a remake effort with the promise of actor Michael B. Jordan leading the cast. It’s been a thing of internet rumor soup for some time now, but all centering on a spin-off for Star Wars mainstay, Obi-Wan Kenobi now appears to be taking shape at long last. Of course, it comes at a pretty hefty time for fans of the Disney/Lucasfilm library who may be somewhat weary of what to expect with the current handling of the new Han Solo standalone film now being overseen by Ron Howard as of June. They’re not wrong and concern is a good thing at this juncture. THE DEFENDERS Final Trailer Pits Our Heroes Against Their Enemies, And Each Other!

The week has been a cruel mistress, so I plan on escaping a bit with tomorrow’s Netflix’s premieres, one of which include Marvel’s The Defenders. Spanning eight episodes and reviving most of the fans’ favorite characters, I’m eager to see how they’ve stepped up on the action and storytelling apart from the drama. I did skim a few reviews, one slightly less approving than the other but the word is that the show is a feasible entry into Netflix’s brand. All four titular programs featuring the headling cast – Charlie Cox (Daredevil) Kristen Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Finn Jones (Iron Fist) each have their respective seasons greenlit as does actor Jon Berenthal’s solo serial debut as The Punisher, and I’m committed to seeing how this evolves, especially after this trailer. Paramount Pictures is reportedly taking initiative as of Wednesday’s news regarding potential spy thriller franchise, The Rhythm Section, which has The Shallows star Blake Lively headlining for The Handmaid’s Tale helmer Reed Morano. In a deal brokered by WME Global, the studio is boarding the film in partnership with IM Global and EON Productions whose Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli (James Bond/007 film series) will mark this as their first-ever step outward into a new IP, and with a female lead no less. VENGEANCE: A LOVE STORY: Nicolas Cage Goes Rogue In The Official Trailer

I’m not usually swayed by the deluge of direct-to-VoD/DVD titles headlining actor Nicolas Cage. Bearing that in mind, I found myself intrigued in the past year or so having spotted the extended sales trailer for Johnny Martin’s directorial debut, Vengenace: A Love Story, a film based on the work of author Joyce Carol Oates and adapted for the screen by John Mankiewicz. That trailer stayed stuck in my head for months to date and it’s probably the only Cage film to have done that in a long, LONG time, and only because it didn’t merely try to sell me a Nicolas Cage action thriller… It sold me characters. Director Jung Byung-Gil’s The Villainess is set to have its day here in the U.S. in just over a week following an eventful film festival run that garnered swarms of praise on many fronts, and having been unable to attend any events myself, I can only hope I’ll get to share the experience with friends by then. By now you’ve probably seen the viral video of actor Tom Cruise injuring himself during a stunt on the Paris set of the sixth Mission Impossible film. Thankfully it hasn’t suffered tragedy currently being endured on two other known productions this summer, but it does exemplify the dangers stunt performers, and even bold actors face when pushing the envelope – something Cruise is known to do. Well… pushing it this time around has cost him, at least tentatively, sending the production into an eight-week hiatus, and producers into troubleshooting mode, according to sources reported by The Wrap. Alas, Craig, who stars this Friday in Steve Soderbergh’s heist comedy, Logan Lucky, took to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to share the good news with fans, marking his own fifth reprisal for the 25 installation of the franchise character.
