It was back in 2015 that award-winning filmmaker Bao Tran graced netizens with an amazing original kung fu action shortfilm titled The Challenger. To that end, I got to achieve quite a bit in interviewing Tran and performers Andy Le and Unlucky Stars actor Ken Quitugua and assuredly, I can attest that this project has a much more prospective and grand reach. Recon Acquires Majority Stake In Millenium

Millenium Public-listed China-based Recon Holding has reportedly acquired the majority interest in the independent film staple, Millennium Films according to a new press announcement. News of the deal in its development began circulating as early as last week. The terms of the deal confirm that Recon Holding’s 51% acquisition majority ownership stake in Millennium Films for $100 million (RMB 688 million) and its 300-film library with the option to acquire the remaining 49% thereafter. Avi Lerner and Trevor Short, who founded Millenium as a subsidiary of Nu Image in 1996, are remaining on board as Chief Executive Officer and Millennium Films and Chief Operating Officer, respectively, while Recon Chairman Dr. Tony Xia will serve as Chairman of Millennium Films. TOMBOY Arrives On UK Digital HD and DVD This March And April

Director Walter Hill’s latest action thriller hasn’t yet picked up steam in the U.S. for its release but it’s getting the Digital HD and DVD treatment when Tomboy arrives respectively in the U.K. on March 13 and April 3. And yes, you read correctly. That’s the title they get whereas the title in other markets may be anywhere from (Re)Assignment to The Assignment… My guess is it will be the latter for its U.S. release via Saban – an otherwise workable bit of wordplay for a title given the premise, although Tomboy would have been a wonderful move, universally. Wednesday brought a flurry of news surrounding director Joe Carnahan who gave a slate of exclusives to various sites, including Collider.com and ComingSoon.net. Thus, following breaking news over The Raid remake and Uncharted, it was Comicbook.com that brought us the word that Carnahan is the man poised to direct the forthcoming X-Force adaptation. Carnahan will be joined by Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds in scripting the adaptation of the popular comic book property which began under Marvel in 1991 from creator Rob Liefeld. Arguably, there’s almost no question that Gareth Edwards’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story delivered something pretty cool back in December as a one-off from the Star Wars canon, telling of a story of ragtag rebels who set out to influence the major battle ahead for the Rebel Alliance against the Empire. Indeed, more can be expected in the forthcoming book installation, Inferno Squad, which hits shelves this July while we await the story to be told of one of the saga’s biggest and most pivotal figures in next year’s Han Solo spin-off film from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. That said, we now advance toward small screen endeavors wherein it was last summer that Bryan Singer and Matt Nix were officially reported as on-board for a pilot committment with Fox Television’s advancement of a live-action X-Men TV series inspired by the hit Marvel franchise. Sleepless (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD) Director Baran bo Odar’s crime remake, Sleepless, is still in my personal viewing queue and eventually I’ll post my own thoughts on it in a review or via Instagram. IRON FIST Explores Danny Rand In A New Featurette

I as much as anyone can’t wait to spend the weekend of March 17 digesting Netflix’s new Marvel installation, Iron Fist. Finn Jones stars in the title role based on the comic book tale of a young plane crash survivor who, years later, follows up with his mysterious return to New York City with a special skill set he’ll need to take down the plutocrats running his father’s business and legacy, and the city, into darkness. Jones makes his case here in a recently-released featurette for the series in which he discusses these events and a whole lot more, with a cast that also includes Jessica Henwick, Jessica Henwick, Tom Pelphrey, Rosario Dawson and David Wenham. Simon Kinberg May Direct X-MEN: THE NEW MUTANTS For Fox

I haven’t yet seen X-Men: Apocalypse so I couldn’t tell you my opinion on it just yet, but the word now from Collider is that Simon Kinberg is poised to direct the next film in the franchise for 20th Century Fox. For this, the report also suggests it may possible, albeit currently unclear, that actress Sophie Turner may reprise her role as Jean Grey in the supposed film following earlier reports of Josh Boone’s own development of said film previous noted as being based on The New Mutants story back in 2015. Kinberg shares credits on plenty of Fox’s Marvel treatments, namely X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool, as well as the latest series premiere of FX superhero series, Legion, and the upcoming release of the highly-acclaimed James Mangold-directed X-Men spin-off, Logan. Universal Word is that F. Gary Gray’s April 14 release of The Fate Of The Furious from Universal Pictures is being given a 160-minute run time. I’d say that’s pretty sizable and appropriate for a saga that has lasted seven epic action movie installments and there’s no doubt that actress Charlize Theron’s role will be pivotal in the film given the approach being hinted in the trailers so far. The new Han Solo spin-off film still doesn’t have an official title, but we now have our first look at a cast photo marking the start of principal photography at Pinewood Studios as of Monday. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie) are directing the film as one of several current spin-offs for Disney and Lucasfilm’s on-going Star Wars saga in lieu of Rian Johnson’s coming Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Tokusatsu gained a foothold in Indonesia with the 2013 series run, Bima Satria Garuda. Since then, the show which centered on a young hero’s discovery of a power stone to take on the evil Vudo empire after a mysterious alien portal to Earth emerges, spawned a sequel series in 2015 and is now on deck for a full feature film expansion. That film now exists with the most recent Jakarta Toys and Comic Fair 2017 premiere of the first trailer for Satria Heroes: Revenge of Darkness well over a week ago. Alan Mak, prolific co-helmer of the Infernal Affairs and Overheard movies recently paired up with co-director Anthony Pun (cinematographer: The White Storm, Monster Hunt) for a stellar new action thriller coming this Spring. That film arrives in the form of Extraordinary Mission and while not much was known at the time about this film, at least two teasers were unveiled to the public eye last year that were pretty attention getting. This month now brings us a new trailer for the film which centers on a cop who goes deep cover to foil a drug trafficking ring. I reckon there may still be plenty more to a plot that simple but we have cast that enlists Huang Xuan, Duan Yihong, Lang Yueting, Zu Feng, Xing Jia-Dong, and David Wang, and a release date in China set for April 1. Independent filmmaker Franklin Correa is back this year and switching gears just a bit from his usual action-tethered efforts in films like Flash Drive and Mistaken. Thus, we get a first trailer for upcoming action horror, Lyco which centers on a collector who is but one of several people eyeing an ancient relic smuggled into the U.S., including a sadistic voodoo serial killer with more nefarious purposes. Macquell James stars in the title role with a cast that joins Correa with Nikki Silva, Marilynn Tolentino, Dayveonne Bussey, Lester Greene, Miguelina Olivares, Bruno Barros, Sandra Fernandez and Greta Quispe.
