RED SONJA: Bryan Singer Up To Helm Remake For Millenium
I sat and thought from time to time about who should star in a remake of Red Sonja. I’m thoroughly sold on the idea of casting either Rebecca Ferguson or even Jessica Chastain for title.
That said, depending on how far things go, I’m slightly confident that Sophie Turner would suit the role given having shared the set prior with X-Men: Apocalypse helmer Bryan Singer. Word from Heat Vision at THR states the beleagured helmer of upcoming Bohemian Rhapsody is being tapped to direct the film for Millenium.
The character was originally recreated by Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor with partial inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s own shortstory work from the 1930s. The crux of Red Sonja centers on a young girl from the Western Hyrkanian steppes who trains and sets out to seek revenge for her own rape and the murder of her family.
Richard Fleischer’s original 1985 adaptation from MGM and United Artists with Bridgette Nielsen and co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger initially bombed critically and commerically. In the years that followed, the film sustained a cult following through its merchandising and a television adaptation in the 1990s with talk of a remake by Robert Rodriguez about a decade ago that never came to pass.
Singer’s involvement will be a testament toward his recovery according to the trades in the months since falling out with 20th Century Fox during the production of Bohemian Rhapsody. The director was also hit with sexual assault allegations among a raft of other incidents that apparently dates back to the 1990s (which, going by this enumeration over at Indiewire, pretty much rules out Chastain, I suppose).
That said, these incidents still might be a factor – or not, even as Singer lost his manager and a production deal at Fox. If there’s a name change in who’ll direct, I’ll be sure to keep track.
It’s unfortunate, really. Singer has done some terrific work which makes a lot of these headlines hard to bear with – but you can’t argue against the facts of these matters however you choose to interpret them. Maybe this really is Singer’s moment… or is it?
