FIVE-A-DAY ROUND-UP XIV: Aquaman, Deadpool 2, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Alpha

I haven’t seen Justice League yet but I heard it was another mixed bag for some fans. Going forward, Warner Bros. still has a stake in the DCEU and will be ramping up efforts to promote James Wan’s own contribution, Aquaman, to the masses ahead of its December 21, 2018 release with Jason Momoa reprising as the Atlantean king now forced to deal with internal woes of his own Kingdom while fighting to preserve peace with people on land. I’ll see Justice League soon enough to garner an opinion here. Beyond that, let’s hope it’s not too late for the studio to pull itself together on this.

A quick Google search reveals that Deadpool 2 is actually supposed to have a much less generic title…unless it’s Deadpool 2 then I really have no complaints and Fox shouldn’t really overkill on this one. Ryan Reynolds is back as well as select cast members from the soaring 2016 hit from director Tim Miller. Atomic Blonde helmer David Leitch makes his sophomore offering in the chair with Reynolds joined by Josh Brolin in his second Marvel debut this time around as Cable. The initial teaser from last month gave fans plenty to be thankful for until a full trailer arrives for the film’s June 1 release.

Marvel’s stake in the MCU has been hugely fruitful for fans. Coming in after Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, they had a plan, they stuck to it and now has the benefits of expanding its universe further into that of British Airways’s favorite travel destination, Wakanda, in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther. Chadwick Boseman returns from Captain America: Civil War to present the character in shining, standalone fashion as we approach Avengers: Infinity War in May.

…Which obviously leads us to Avengers: Infinity War from The Winter Soldier and Civil War helmers Joe and Anthony Russo. The two proved amply useful together on their previous Captain America outings and have now fully immersed themselves in this, the MCU’s biggest narrative film effort bringing our heroes closer to their forthcoming battle with Thanos played by the aforementioned Brolin. The first official teaser trailer arrived last month and so…it begins!

Veering off of superhero movies for this last one, Kodi Smit-McPhee has an extra mouth to feed in Albert Hughes’s striking new adventure, Alpha. Opening on March 2, the film is set in the last Ice Age where an injured young boy and a wounded wolf abandoned by its pack become unlikely allies as they brave the elements and unrelenting dangers of the wilderness to find their way home. I was compelled by the trailer when I first saw it and best of all, I love stories about animals and humans co-existing together. This is gonna be fun.
