IN MEMORIAM: Stan Lee (1922-2018)

The past several years haven’t been the best had for comic book auteur and visonary Stan Lee. Still, in the over 95 years of his existence, his is a life that fans of his work have celebrated to this day, and the ceremony will be ever more ongoing as all things Marvel move forward in print, film and other multi-media.
News of Lee’s passing on Monday brings tremendous sadness this week. Lee launched his legendary career in 1939 and grew the Marvel brand a few decades later with the likes of Jack Kirby and other creatives. His life’s work beyond comic books has seen itself translated through countless film and TV productions with this year marking a decade since the Marvel Cinematic Universe under Walt Disney Co. Lee also made several cameos and small appearances in most of those films, with his last two including Ant-Man and The Wasp and last month’s release, Venom; Lee also had a cameo in a work not his own, adapted in 1998 with Stephen Norrington’s Blade, although that scene was later removed.
The venerable comic book legend saw a series of troubles following the death of his wife, Joan, last July, including a lawsuit against execs of his own company at POW! Entertainment (which he later dropped), as well as his former business partner, and a restraining order against a former personal assisstant among other issues.
Lee was 95 when he passed away on Monday early Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He leaves behind daughter, JC, along with a raft of lifetime achievements and accolades.
His legacy is enveloped with an eclectic line-up of memorable and beloved superheroes and villains drawn and created with depth, scope and purpose, all stemming from a brand he birthed and nurtured for more than half-a-century. It sure was a life worth living, and one that fans will continue to celebrate for the years to come.
