ROBOCOP Finds Its Alex Murphy For Prime Video’s Series Revamp
Actor Dan Stevens will play the title role in the new RoboCop series developing for Prime Video. Stevens joins a team comprised of Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner – co-writers of the original Orion Pictures release, are exec producing next to Peter Ocko who is also showrunner.
In the eight-episode Robocop series, written by Ocko, a giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer, Alex Murphy (Stevens).
James Wan is also exec producing at Blumhouse Atomic Monster next to Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett. Co-exec producer Danielle Bozzone overseeing the series for the company.
“Peter Ocko has crafted a vision that honors the soul of what made the original so enduring while building something entirely fresh and urgent for today,” Amazon MGM Studios’ Head of Global TV Peter Friedlander said at the time of the pickup about the series, which takes a contemporary look at the questions the original 1987 movie raised “about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve,” as James Wan put it at the time.
Stevens marks the fifth actor to claim the role since Peter Weller brought it to fruition in Paul Verhoeven’s inaugural 1987 R-rated crowdpleaser. It spawned two sequels and several TV releases, and a theatrical reboot in 2014 starring Joel Kinnaman.
The Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire actor will next be seen in A24’s Onslaught, opening in theaters September 4.
