ROBODOC: THE CREATION OF ROBOCOP Docuseries Now Available On U.S. VOD And Streaming
RoboDoc: The Creation Of RoboCop is now playing on VOD and streaming, with the first of its four-part retrospective docuseries available through Cinedigm’s Screambox platform. All four parts will be released weekly through September 19, with an official Blu-Ray release slated for October 17. A UK release remains in the works. Directed by Christopher Griffiths and Eastwood Allen, RoboDoc: The Creation Of RoboCop is a crowdfunded project that launched nearly seven years ago, aimed at covering the phenomenon that began with the R-rated 1987 sci-fi action thriller. The extensive documentary is billed as “an immersive 4+ hour journey into the making of the seminal sci-fi movie” that will include over 60 cast and crew interviews, including the original star of the inaugural film and Irvin Kershner’s 1990 follow-up, Dr. Peter Weller. I remember the first time I saw Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi, RoboCop. By then I was already familiar with the ultra-violent tone having seen the sequel first, though it didn’t take away at all from the experience of observing the story of our hero, Alex Murphy, played iconically by Peter Weller once upon a time. Fast forward through to the new millenium, RoboCop, in its purest original form, stands the test of time for fans alike, and far from any of its latter, more toned-down PG-13 treatments in film and television. Nope, nothing of the sort. We watched as Murphy shed blood and donned the cybernetic armor and implants as the brainchild hero that would ultimately fight back against citywide crime and the corporate plutocracy that created him. Like Its Title Character, A ROBOCOP Sequel Still Has A Fighting Chance
Pic Source: Robocop Archive R-rated classics from the 80’s and 90’s are all the rave for the average action junkie, and the same goes for Paul Verohoeven’s 1987 cyborg action cop thriller, Robocop. Needless to say, director Jose Padilha’s 2014 reboot for Sony with actor Joel Kinnaman didn’t exactly pan out well with its domestic U.S. release having earned a little over half of its $100 million dollar budget. That said, foreign markets did aid in giving the film its extra earning muscle to more than double its budget, which is slightly telling of how optional sequels are for similar films in today’s climate. Apparently the same goes for Sony according to the latest word from Den Of Geek who are now saying that sequel plans are neither a priority nor dead for that matter, with the likelihood of a Chinese co-production should the film move forward. It was back in 2012 that stuntman and award-winning independent filmmaker Dorian Kingi took to his third stint behind the camera for dramatic action short that coupling dramatic action and themes with the assembly of raw stunt talent. The project in question is titled Violence, existing under the PMV Entertainment indie film banner founded by fellow actor and stuntman Jason Sweat, and hosts principal performances by Solomon Brende and Xingu Rodil starring as two guys who rush to a graffiti wall owned by a group of thugs to settle the score for brutally attacking their friends. HBO’s Game Of Thrones is one of those shows I usually end up having to watch in pieces, particularly because there simply aren’t enough hours of the day for me to enjoy much of anything. Director Josè Padilha‘s newest film, Robocop, is set to release in North America on February 12, 2014. Promotion is underway for the new film with sets of viral ads and posters, including the international poster you can see on the left for the film’s Chinese release. Today, IGN has unveiled the first fill clip of the film, which sees lead actor Joel Kinnaman donning the all-black suit as the eponymous half-man/half-machine crime fighter. Another brand new international trailer went hot on Wednesday for the upcoming 2D/3D/IMAX February 12, 2014 U.S. release of Robocop. Going into it, remember when most of us had our doubts about it? Well, I’m sure some of you still do, but the new trailer still attracts seems to attract some interest. There’s more drama, more intensity, a little more poignancy…oh, and yes, actor Joel Kinnaman on a motorcycle beasting his way through killer robots, explosions, etc. You know? Fun stuff! Personally, I miss Don LaFontaine as I still feel trailers still need that extra voice over edge from a cinematic perspective. But that’s just me. Thursday’s press release for director José Padilha‘s latest reboot for RoboCop mark the first time the character will be introduced through the modern advancements fortified in IMAX technology since the cybernetic law enforcer was first introduced to its R-rated movie-loving audience in 1987. A lot of people still have their doubts about this one, seeing as how the latest trailer likely invokes the film’s highly criticized PG-13 look, although it is also earning some early optimism, especially since the footage was first revealed for onlookers at the San Diego Comic Con which likely grants the film’s new approach to the story a little more exciting and worth the price of a ticket than some may choose to believe. I admit, I had my doubts about Columbia Pictures’ PG-13-ized RoboCop film from director José Padilha. But I have to say that a new and reimagined version of the title character brought to the big screen in the late 80’s might have something different to offer. I could get used to this, so we’ll see how this one plays out when it releases on February 7, 2014. But for now, I’m liking it.
