James Cameron Breathes New Life For Next TERMINATOR Film

Don’t ask me about Terminator: Genysis. I haven’t had the chance to see that film as with a lot of films in recent memory, although I have seen clips and read and heard many reactions from moviegoers, many of whom have pretty much said that the film was bust.

Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor directed the film as one of several Terminator installments that moved forward in recent years without James Cameron in the past eighteen years since he reportedly sold the rights to the film producer Gale Anne Hurd. The franchise itself has endured both a creative and legal rollercoaster landing at several homes before landing at Annapurna in 2011 following Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines and Terminator: Salvation – apparently the latter was supposed to start a new trilogy and ultimately that never panned out.

Hence, Genysis, and the subsequent shelving by Paramount of any further films according to several reports after October of 2015 and January 2016, et cetera. Fast forward a year later and now it appears the next, and reportedly final film is underway according to Deadline that states Cameron, who endorsed Genysis due to action star Arnold Schwarzenegger’s involvment, is godfathering the film’s development with Deadpool helmer and VFX wiz Tim Miller being eyed to direct. It would seem like a good move following Miller’s departure from the Deadpool sequel last year with the goal of landing bigger-budget affairs, and certainly the Terminator franchise is no exception.

The report writes that the film, for which its franchise rights are set to revert back to Cameron in 2019, is being set up as a finale to officially send the franchise off since its fame as an ambitious  sci-fi indie thriller in 1984. There aren’t any other specific details being mentioned about the film while Cameron himself plots the remaining four Avatar sequels dated in his wake between next December, and the fifth film in 2023. Miller himself has a sci-fi project called Influx, and is executive producing Jeff Fowler’s Sonic The Hedgehog live-action animated hybrid for Sony Pictures and Marza Animation.

There’s more news likely coming as well if last year’s announcement of a 3D re-release of Terminator 2: Judgement Day is still on deck for this summer. The poster below was ceremonially unveiled last year in August in what is expected to commemorate the film’s 25th anniversary.
