SHAFT Finds Its Director In Tim Story To Reboot The Classic Hit Film
Early 2015 saw the news of a reboot of the hit 1971 blackploitation classic, Shaft, in development from Davis Entertainment’s John Davis. Now, the film has reportedly solidified its creative end with the attachment of Kevin Hart: Now What? co-director Tim Story to helm the film for which its application still remains a mystery.
The original film, directed by Gordon Parks and heralded by its popular title track from award-winning recording artist Isaac Hayes, was a phenomenon with Richard Roundtree starring in the title role, a badass New York detective who infiltrates the criminal underworld to rescue a mob boss’s daughter. The film ultimately spawned sequels and a TV show, as well as a pseudo remake in 2000 with Samuel L. Jackson starring, and Roundtree making a cameo.
Story’s credits include Fox’s 2005 Marvel adaptation of Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, as well as the 2014 action comedy, Ride Along and its 2016 sequel while he currently remains on board the third installment as of last October. Writer Alex Barnow is scripting the Shaft reboot with co-writer and Black-Ish series creator Kenya Barris who is producing with Davis, along with Ira Napoliello.
