MAELSTROM: Keanu Reeves To Star In Jaume Collet-Serra’s ‘Die Hard’-Inspired Upgrade Of Early 90s Spec Script For Netflix

Keanu Reeves is loading up on work for the next few years with Maelstrom being his latest gig at Netflix per Page Six Hollywood’s Ian Mohr. The news marks the latest update in an off/on process that’s taken over three decades since the project’s development at Warner Bros.
Jaume Collet-Serra (Carry On) will direct from a script originally written by Greg Fitzpatrick at the time and has since been revised and updated by Marc Bianculli. Jeff Robinov, formerly of Warner Bros where the film previously landed as a spec script in 1993 as part of a wave of studio projects primed as successors to genre-defining hits like Die Hard, is producing.
“Maelstrom” follows a Federal Marshall tasked with guarding the fiancée of an arms dealer who’s seeking witness protection as she preps to testify against him. The story takes place over one night as a hurricane rolls in, knocking out communication — and the duo fights to survive the arms dealer’s henchmen and the elements.
The film also reteams Collet-Serra with Bianculli following their recent collab on Vertical’s upcoming Cliffhanger revamp. The casting of Reeves’, who is also slated for an adaptation of Kill Current for The Arena and a revamp of The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil at Paramount, replaces Alan Ritchson who has since left the project after circling it over the summer.
