MORTAL KOMBAT Producer: ‘No Release Date Or Trailer Until Theaters Re-Open’
I wasn’t sure if it be good rapport on my part to even post about this, but it’s become even more clearer that the new Mortal Kombat movie will not arrive on January 15, 2021 as expected.
The film was previously dated for March 5 next year and moved up as casting and production news made the rounds for the Adelaide shoot that currently marks commerical director Simon McQuoid’s feature debut at the helm.
“Well, I thought by the casts’ social media you would’ve figured out we’re shooting a few more days.” says producer Todd Garner to a fan via Twitter. “We’d always planned for it & thought we’d do it in March. The pandemic had other plans. We won’t have a release date for the movie until theaters re-open. Same for trailer.”
Cast members Lewis Tan and Max Huang are just a few of the actors who’ve notably posted via social media about their exploits back into Australia, hinting at shoots for additional photography for the new Mortal Kombat movie.
It’s been a decade since a reboot of the Midway/NetherRealm Studios fighting game IP announced a reboot that’s been much talked about in the years since New Line Cinema released two live-action adaptations in 1995 and 1997.
With Covid-19 retaining its grip on several parts of the world since the top of the year, theaters are among many businesses that have had to suffer closures and quarantine mandates, particularly in the United States where Coronavirus cases have topped well over ten million, and with deaths currently peaking 242,000.
To think how bad enough it is we’ve had to wait out 23 years of film politics and stagnation just to see news about a new film in the works for one of the most edgy, thrilling and beloved game properties, that we’re also forced to contend with a worsening pandemic as a result… it sucks, I know. I’d go into why this all is, but that’s not what this blog is for. All I know is that I’m glad there’s at least some kind of a change coming, and with any luck, we can all go back to enjoying the theatrical moviegoing experience that Garner is certainly hoping for.
Until then, wear your masks in public, practice social distancing, and help save the movies!
Garner is producing the movie alongside James Wan. Exec producers are Michael Clear, Lawrence Kasanoff, Sean Robbins and E. Bennett Walsh.
