Reiki Tsuno’s MAD CATS Is Coming To Midnight Pulp In Late 2023!
I’ve been living under a rock of immense work and with very little help, so I completely missed the announcement just over a month ago when Reiki Tsuno’s action comedy, Mad Cats, was acquired by Cineverse to begin streaming exclusively on Midnight Pulp in late 2023.
Indeed, that’s the case and so finally folks who’ve been following action actress Ayane on social media and are keen on seeing her breakout role may finally be able to do so. The film had its initial premiere at Slamdance earlier this year and I was one of the fortunate ones to receive a virtual invite to screen and review it. Suffice it to say, I was a happy film critic.
Tsuno makes his debut on Mad Cats casting Ayane alongside Sho Mineo, Yuya Matsura and So Yamanaka for the story of an aimless mobile home park dweller who receives a message about the whereabouts of his missing brother. He sets out on a long and treacherous quest to find him, and with the help of a haplessly-enveloped homesless bystander, and a mysterious woman fully-loaded with enough weapons for a small army and fighting skills to match, they’ll confront the assailants holding him captive: A band of female humanoid monster cats bent on waging war on unscrupulous pet shop owners.
“No more depressing movies from Japan. I want to make movies that make you feel happy” said writer/director Reiki Tsuno. Adds Midnight Pulp Channel Manager Matthew Kiernan, “We’ve been looking for something truly special, completely wild and wholly original for our first-ever exclusive premiere and once we saw MAD CATS at Fantasia, we knew we found it. MAD CATS will be catnip to audiences looking for something wild and entertaining and we can’t wait for them to experience it.”
The acquisition came on the eve of the film’s premiere at Fantasia last month. I guess any chance of a physical release with some special features will have to come by other means, but if niche FAST, AVOD and SVOD streaming services are more your speed, Mad Cats on Midnight Pulp ought to meet your needs. I’ll try to keep an eye out for its avaialbility in the meantime.
For now, here’s a brief behind-the-scenes taste of the action:
Native New Yorker. Lover of all things pizza, chocolate, pets, and good friends. Karaoke hero. Left of center. Survivor. Fond supporter of cult, obscure and independent cinema - especially fond of Asian movies and global action cinema. Author of the bi-weekly Hit List. Founder and editor of Film Combat Syndicate. Still, very much, only human.
