REVENGE OF THE BLACK WIDOW: Helen Dang Busts A Move With A Message In Team Red Pro’s Abundant Akini Jing Cover
The last few years have seen Team Red Pro’s Joseph Le tread a little bit into horror territory, mingling many of its tropes into his brand of action and stunt design. One of his more recent contributions can be seen here, while another entry comes by way of his previous creative venture with Helen Dang for an inspired take on Akini Jing’s 2023 hit, “Black Widow”.
Thus, it was Le who directed that particular music video, and since drew together a high concept video in the following year with a group of artists led by Helen Dang for the concept herein dubbed Revenge Of The Black Widow. This one pretty much builds on its predecessor, but amplifies many of its particles to deliver something authentic and palatable, particularly touching on aesthetics similar to hit series Warrior which was a favorite of ours on this platform during its run.
Dang and choreographers Jillian Ung and Mieko Isaac also shepherded the kinetic dance sequences, punctuated with fight choreography by Tarell Kota Bullock in delivering the kind of signature action that Team Red Pro has become so prolific for in its artistic m.o. and collaborative auspices. The setup? Dang plays a maidservant-turned-psycho who leads a bloody rebellion against Tong gangsters in 1950s Chinatown, San Francisco. Sweet!
Leslie Kwan and Janis Zhong also star. Cue the drama, cool camerawork and crazy edits in the performances of this bunch – ancillary to why I enjoy Le’s work.
