Streaming Sleepers: Isaac Florentine’s UNDISPUTED 2: LAST MAN STANDING Remains A Champion DTV Throwback
The 2000s certainly felt like a nexus point for a lot of action films after Hong Kong cinema gained a renewed foothold in the West in the previous decade. It made room for directors like “Power Rangers” veteran Isaac Florentine to become much more prolific by then, particularly with what he accomplished in the DTV arena with High Voltage, U.S. Seals 2: The Ultimate Force, and Special Forces.
In this regard, it certainly benefitted Florentine with the production and subsequent release of Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing, a film which – after the titanic tour de force of having Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung in SPL – made his presentation of Michael Jai White and Scott Adkins all the more satiating. To add, the film would ultimately contribute to Adkins’ own screen potency with the persona of Yuri Boyka, a villain with an indomitable ring prowess whose antagonistic fervor would drive a multi-film redemption arc in the sequels that would follow suit, punctuated by some of Adkins’ biggest kicks and high caliber action presence.
White inherits the role of George Chambers from Ving Rhames per Walter Hill’s inaugural film, in a story that transports fans to Russia where Chambers’ career is on the ropes and he’s left doing commercials to pick up the slack. Suddenly, police violently raid his hotel room and falsely accuse him of a crime before jettisoning him into one of Russia’s most notorious prisons where he’s proffered a chance to compete in its in-house fighting tournament where Boyka reigns supreme.
Admittedly, it does baffle me at times wondering why Rhames never continued the role of Chambers, or Snipes for that matter seeing as he was the main protagonist. To be fair though, I didn’t really look into these matters and figured Rhames had his reasons. All the same though, White’s handling of the role takes nothing away from its enjoyment alongside supporting performances by Eli Danker and Ben Cross, with Adkins etching the role of Boyka forever in mixed-martial arts movie fandom history.
Whether or not the latter moments in the film pointing at Chambers’ potential return to the franchise ever happens remains to be seen, and the same goes for the long-hyped continuation of the Boyka saga in the franchise. Chalk it up to the advent of torrent sites and piracy damn near killing off the Undisputed franchise of any of its potential, including a TV series that was in the works as recently as 2019…
Either way, I’m prepared to move on as both actors have seemingly moved forward with other projects. However, it is fun to think about just what kind of story a reunion with the two characters would procure if one were to actually happen…
At any rate, consider Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing a worthwhile stream if you haven’t yet.
