REX: Haruki Kadokawa’s Classic Holiday Dinosaur Adventure Lands Exclusive Limited Run At The Metrograph NYC In December

Haruki Kadokawa’s 1993 family adventure, Rex, is setting up an exclusive one-week theatrical run at the Metrograph in New York City from December 11. The screening will mark the film’s theatrical debut in the U.S. outside of its performance at the 19th edition of Japan Cuts back in July.
I reviewed this film and loved it, and only discovered thereafter that a few of my mutuals and readers who also saw it at one point enjoyed it all the same. Now, Kani Releasing is aiming to spread the prehistoric Christmas joy come the holidays, and the Metrograph, per its Dinosauria series through January 3, is inviting you accordingly.
Silly me, I got this e-mail earlier today and blew right past it. So happy I found it now. Read on, and check out my review from Japan Cuts, if you’re keen.
Released just two weeks before Jurassic Park and famed for the off-camera exploits of its director, flamboyant media mogul Kadokawa, Rex: A Dinosaur’s Story managed to do a brisk business at the Japanese box office, tugging heartstrings in telling the story of Chie (Yumi Adachi), a paleontologist’s daughter who discovers a Tyrannosaurus egg with her father (Tsunehiko Watase) and then forms an unlikely friendship with the hatchling that emerges from within. Made with a lavish budget that allowed for contracting the services of special-effects world megastar Carlo Rambaldi (E.T., Possession, Lizard in a Woman’s Skin), Kadokawa’s charmingly bonkers, Christmas-set blockbuster has now been remastered. A Kani Releasing release.
Native New Yorker. Been writing for a long time now, and I enjoy what I do. Be nice to me!
