SHADOW FIST: ORIGINS: Hong Kong Stunt Veteran Robert Samuels To Direct Feature Expansion Of Award-Winning Kung Fu Web Saga [Exclusive]
Actor and Hong Kong stunt veteran Robert Samuels (Red Wolf, Yes Auntie!) will roll cameras this summer in Mexico for independent kung fu feature, Shadow Fist: Origins. The movie is set as a sequel/prequel following up from the titular online shortfilm series of the same name.
That concept began in 2020 as an original lo-fi fantasy kung fu essay inaugurated by Samuels on screen alongside Andre Duza and Sharif Anael-Bey. It spawned two more projects with longer narratives and an expanded talent base from the East Coast through Mexico, focusing on the quest for a powerful kung fu scroll; The third, Shadow Fist 3, enlisted the likes of Roxalinda Vazquez and fellow martial arts film vet, Ron Hall in 2024, taking home its share of festival wins that year including Best International Short Film, Best Action Choreography, and Best Action Director at TACFEST.
With Shadow Fist: Origins, the film is being billed as a prequel/sequel to its predecessors, with a story that stretches three hundred years before its present timeline. The cast is led by Tora Aledia and Xochitl Aledia who will play Wei and Rou, respectively – twin sisters trained by their master, Oso, in the ancient arts of the Shadow Fist.
The rest of the synopsis reads as follows: Tasked with apprehending a fugitive named Fang Li Hao, their mission becomes intertwined with the pursuit of the mystical Immortal Scroll of the Shadow Fist, an ancient artifact of immense power that can corrupt its wielders. Fang, who possesses the scroll, is being hunted by the Thirteen Serpents gang and their leader Boss Chen, who has become obsessed with obtaining the scroll’s power. After a series of confrontations, Rou ends up with the scroll, which begins to channel its energy through her, giving her extraordinary abilities but also threatening to consume her. The sisters discover that Boss Chen has been studying dark counter-magic to neutralize the scroll and bend it to his will. When Boss Chen captures Rou, Wei teams up with Fang to rescue her sister. Who will be victorious and who will live to possess the Immortal Scroll of the Shadow Fist?
“We just felt like there’s still a ton of real estate left unexplored in the SF universe, and, as much as we want and plan to tell other stories, we will likely be dipping back into the world of Shadow Fist from time to time. In fact, I have an idea for another episode that I’m honestly kind of excited about,” said Jefferson in a statement to FCSyndicate.

“We debated when, how, and even if we were going to do another Shadow Fist. Ultimately I see Shadow Fist as being a martial arts anthology in the format of like a Twilight Zone or BAS, where the stories are unconnected other than the Scroll serving as permanent through line.”
Samuels, a member of the Hong Kong Stunt Association and once a mentee in the 1990s to screen legend Sammo Hung, will direct from a script by longtime partner Robert Jefferson, with whom he will also produce over at R4 Films LLC. I am told that Jefferson finished writing the final draft of the script just this week.
The cast also includes Lisa Olivas and Omar Rios, and martial arts laureate and R4 Films collaborator Oso Tayari Casel. Actor and action steward Angel G. Brophy (Angie), whose Baja-based BSquad Acción will be lining up the film’s stunt and fight spectacle, will also star; Samuels and Brophy previously collaborated on Nicholas Ortiz’s 2022 crime short, Jugando Con Fuego, as well as R4 Films’ Blackout and Shadow Fist 3.
Samuels is also on deck to appear in the Spanish production of Blood Brothers, from director/actor Nacho Serapio, and is still in development with Jefferson for their slate at R4 Films, including kung fu fantasy adventure, Journey of 1000 Styles.
