Malaysian filmmaker Adrian Teh is busy making another cinematic memory for us to endulge in the new year these days. In the meantime, his most recent work, Reversi, had made its way through the international festival circuit long enough to garner some publicity in the past year. The film is now playing in Malaysian cinemas and stars actor Beto Kusyairy who has easily become a favorite to watch in recent memory. Here, Kusyairy plays Akid, a police negotiator whose ability to time-travel unravels a harrowing journey as he battles fate to save his incumbent wife from death at the expense of his own lifespan. I just caught the trailer as well and couldn’t resist sharing it, along with a little more of Kusyairy on screen – him being one of the most definitive and physically commanding actors I’ve seen on film. Deft at drama as well as action, the Mat […]
If you’ve missed Malaysian film director Adrian Teh and were wondering at all what he’d been up to, you needn’t look further than the set of his current heist adventure, Magik Rompak. Clover Films and ACT 2 Pictures are shepherding production with the former handling international sales. Magik Rompak tells the story of a leading magician who assembles a reluctant crew for an audacious and daring heist to steal a priceless gem. As their pasts intertwine and the stakes rise, the team must perfect the art of illusion, confront their own vulnerabilities, and orchestrate the ultimate vanishing act to protect their futures. Leading the ensemble cast are Sharnaaz Ahmad, Zul Ariffin, Miller Khan, Fabian Loo, Amelia Henderson, Yasmin Hani, Elvina Mohamad, and veteran Singaporean actor Tay Ping Hui. It has a budget of RM13 million and is filming entirely in Malaysia over a 50-day period. Variety’s Patrick Frater has more […]
Recent Malaysian titles like Paskal, Wira and The Assistant should come to mind as a reminder that the work of director Adrian Teh in the last several years has not gone unnoticed. He now returns to the table with patriotic action adventure Malbatt: Misi Bakara, billed as Malaysia’s most expensive film to date, and with a new trailer courtesy of Act 2 Pictures, and a local release slated for August. Based on a true story of the 19th Battalion Malay Regiment, which was deployed as part of the United Nations peacekeeping force in 1993, and their mission to rescue the trapped American soldiers in the Bakaara Market, Mogadishu, Somalia following the Black Hawk Down attack. Teh directs a cast that reunites him with familiars from previous projects, including Bront Palarae (Wira), Shaheizy Sam (Polis Evo franchise), Hairul Azreen (Paskal, Wira, The Assistant), Zahiril Adzim (Ada Hantu 1 and 2), and […]
The ceremony has only begun for Malaysian director Adrian Teh, best known as one of several for bringing some of the Southeast Asian region’s most notable action pictures to audiences with titles like Paskal and Wira to boast about. His latest, The Assistant, just had its World Premiere at the 24th Udine Far East Film Festival in Italy and is currently on course to screen at the 21st Neuchâtel International Film Festival in Switzerland this July. Before then, local audiences can expect to catch the new action crime thriller beginning May 19, from Sony Pictures Malaysia, and a new trailer and poster are online as of last month. Peep both atop and below this page. In the quest to avenge his family, Zafik has to watch who he can trust. Written, directed, and produced by industry wunderkind, Adrian Teh (PASKAL: The Movie); the action-thriller “The Assistant” tells the story of […]
It’s a new day as you’re reading this, and of course, any day is as good as today if you’re already familiar with the work of filmmaker Adrian Teh. If not, and you just so happen to have Netflix, then by all means – flip that bastard on and check out Teh’s previous 2018 naval thriller, Paskal, and 2019’s hard-hitting Wira, both featuring leading man Hairul Azreen who’s been on a mission of sorts to help put a face on Malaysian action cinema, and bring its appeal to the forefront of today’s market next to other territories. The actor dives in on this topic and much more in the latest read over at online mag, The Star, where the most recent trailer just debuted for Teh’s newest action thriller, The Assistant, which hails from Sony Pictures International Malaysia. Opening in TGV Cinemas on March 10, The Assisstant joins Azreen in […]
Adrian Teh (The Wedding Diary, Paskal, Wira) will direct I Am Vash, an original action crime series that will star award-winning talents, actress Sangeeta Krishnasamy (Best Female Actor winner at the 29th Malaysian Film Award, Adiwiraku) and actor Bront Palarae (Gundala, Fly By Night). 108 Media is producing the series with Zainir Aminullah’s premium production shingle Revolution Media as co-producer, with eight one-hour episodes to commence principal photography next May for an early 2023 premiere. I Am Vash takes its cues from historical events, iconography, and real-life superheroes, written and authentically developed with a cross-border writers’ room for both local and international market appeal, with the show’s dialogue to be primarily written in English and Malay, as well as in Tamil and Cantonese dialects. The series revolves around the crime-ridden seaside town of Port Klang during the groovy 1970s in Malaysia, where we meet Vash, a rebellious policewoman who stands […]
It’s been an endeavor to witness today’s industry reshape itself to accommodate certain releases, none more prospective in this day and age for southeast Asia’s regional output with Netflix looking to meet the demand. The prospect and global appeal for director Adrian Teh’s own work is a welcome one, following last year’s introduction to Malaysian action star, actor Hairul Azreen with military thriller, Paskal: The Movie, and a spritely move toward genre fanfare with martial arts action thriller, Wira, that all but seals the fated interest of fans. Written by Paskal: The Movie and Polis Evo 1 & 2 scribe Anwari Ashraf from a story by Teh, a straightforward tale ensues of an ex-commando newly returned from service. Azreen plays Hassan, once a legendary and fearless fighter in the seedy criminal underbelly of his old neighborhood working for untouchable crimeboss, Raja (Dain Said). Hassan’s only goal is to reunite with […]
It’s a welcoming thing that Netflix has become such a beacon for elevated genre cinema in some aspects. The streamer’s accomodation of such hits freshly out of Indonesia, The Phillipines such as The Raid, Merantau and The Night Comes For Us, Erik Matti’s BuyBust and Pedring Lopez’s Maria, are just several examples aimed at pulling in fans of action who are in the market for productions out of Asia. To add, an announcement from Netflix on Wednesday for Adrian Teh’s latest thriller, Wira, which now marks the Malaysian filmmaker’s second title to land on the streamer since military actioner, Paskal, late last year. The streamer will release Wira globally on Netflix starting Monday, June 15. Actor Hairul Azreen rejoins Paskal vets Teh, and actor Henley Hii, along with international sensation Yayan Ruhian, and actor Dain Iskandar Said. Azreen plays an ex-soldier home from service and on a mission to rescue […]
“Your brother never told you never to threaten a man’s family?” As cheesy as the Fast franchise is to critics aplenty, that line is easily one of my favorites from Justin Lin’s Furious 6. Catching the newest trailer for director Adrian Teh’s new film, Wira, I was instantly drawn to that sentiment as it now pertains to the central story that unfolds in the new Malaysian action and martial arts thriller which opens locally on November 21. Hassan leaves home from a young age as he can no longer stand seeing his family and the people around him being pushed around by a man named Raja. He enlists in the military but after leaving it, he returns home to help his family and community. In order to settle the debt his younger brother Zain has incurred after losing an MMA fight organised by Raja, the two brothers team up for […]
Malaysian outlet Astro Shaw officially unveiled its launch teaser for upcoming action thriller, Wira. It’s director Adrian Teh’s latest follow-up from hit military actioner, Paskal, which reportedly sparked his interest in another military-themed project after the 2018 movie became a local hit. As the logline dictates, Wira has actors Hairul Azreen and Henley Hii rejoining Teh for the story of “an ex-military force character who is fearless in fighting but chooses to deal with problems in his diplomatic ways. However, circumstances leave him with no choice but to fight his way to obtain justice for his family and community.” Wira, of course, also sees legendary action star feat, Yayan Ruhian, co-starring next to forthcoming appearances in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and with Joe Taslim in June for Hit & Run. An official date remains pending, but the launch teaser remains all the more reason to keep a lookout.
Malaysian director Adrian Teh is revving up his next military action adventure, Wira, according to an announcement from GSC Movies. Teh will be joined by actor and martial arts star Yayan Ruhian, in addition to reuniting with Hairul Azreen and Henley Hii since starring in Teh’s recent military action thriller, Paskal. As Mumtaj Begum’s coverage this week at Star2 Online reports, Wira centers on a pacifistic military man forced to cast diplomacy aside and apply his skillset once more to save his family. Ruhian is best known for raking up a decade of memorable killer roles in a raft of cult hits since Merantau, The Raid 1 & 2 and Beyond Skykine. The Indonesian actor and action director will next be seen opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 3 on May 17. He is also set to appear later this year in director Syamsul Yusof’s Malay warrior biopic, Mat […]
