ACTION CINEMA BOOKENDS: 90s Schwarzenegger
The rise of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1980s is a thing of legend. After a highly successful bodybuilding career (and a not so successful film career) in the 70s, “Aunold” would break out onto the scene in a big way with 1982’s Conan the Barbarian. His ascension through the ranks of Hollywood was driven by the equally meteoric rise of action cinema in general. More than any other action star, Arnold was a brand unto himself; and with the 90’s fast approaching, he and the genre he now dominated were poised to take over the cinema landscape. WHERE IT STARTED June 1, 1990. Summer movie season is in full swing and Arnold is about to unleash his biggest movie to date: Total Recall. Based on the Philip K. Dick novel “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” and directed by master of violent satire, Paul Verhoeven, Total Recall is about […]

Viy 2 and Journey To China: Mystery Of The Iron Mask, among others). Lionsgate unveiled the official trailer this week as well, with a planed VoD and Digital release on November 20, and on Blu-Ray and DVD beginning November 24. The big seller? Less so the return of Jason Flemyng as cartographer Jonathan Green than headliners Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger duking it out on screen for the first time, in a film that brims with action star brio that might have otherwise been a welcome big screen feat if it weren’t for the idiot Covid-19 pandemic. Ah well, guess we’ll take what we can get. For the first time […]

KUNG FURY 2: THE MOVIE Lines Up Financing, Character Details For September Shoot
One of the biggest and most important keys to getting a feature film going with help from partners at a major market at Cannes is obtaining funding. Filmmaker and actor David Sandberg knows this all too well having earned a world of support for his 2015 OTT half-hour 80’s-inspired fantasy martial arts time travel fantasy thriller, Kung Fury. Fast forward to 2018 and following brewing announcement since then for its feature film fruition and long since debuting at Cannes, Sandberg’s return to the sales floor this year is proving to be well worth the effort. Andreas Wiseman’s exclusive at Deadline on Monday is confirming a September production start for Laser Unicorn’s feature film evolution, Kung Fury 2: The Movie. The report reveals that Argent Pictures, the backer of the 2017 hit drama, Hacksaw Ridge, has joined the upcoming action-comedy production as a financier and producer with Sandberg set once again […]

The Russian Czar Peter the Great commissions Jonathan Green, an English traveller, to map the Far East territories of the Russian Empire. The mega success of David Sandberg’s crowdfunded, stylish martial arts love letter to the 80’s Kung Fury, has opened the floodgates in fine form. The very shortfilm in question is the subject of the bustling news out of Berlin this week as Sandberg readies production on Kung Fury 2: The Movie with several big names attached, including that of actor Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Hollywood Reporter notes. The Maggie and Aftermath star is set to be joined by the newly added Michael Fassbender and David Hasselhoff with Sandberg directing as well as reprising in the title role. Cameron And Miller Discuss The TERMINATOR Reboot; Plots A Summer 2019 Release
I’ll be the last person to invest in any upheaval between filmmakers as much as those keen on what sci-fi auteur James Cameron has to say this week pertaining to Wonder Woman – except that I absolutely had fun seeing it this summer and I’m looking forward to the sequel. For this, we turn to more pertinent news regarding the current progress he’s now making with director Tim Miller on the future of the forthcoming Terminator trilogy finale. Cameron is currently at the helm for a slate of Avatar sequels through 2025 but is also assisting Miller for the ambitious new Terminator trilogy starring actor Arnold Schwarzenegger whose title portrayal of the time-traveling cyborg killing machine from the future made him a household name between 1984 and 1991 with The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. He’ll be joined once again by actress Linda Hamilton who will reprise her role […]

KILLING GUNTHER: Lights, Camera, And Shenanigans In The First Trailer For The Action Comedy
You know, if action star Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn’t such a consistently fun person to watch on camera, you would think his career hit a fever pitch and that he should just call it quits. His latest turnout with Taram Killam’s Killing Gunther serves us ample counterpoint on the matter with an equally fun character and premise to boot. Bobby Moynihan, Cobie Smulders, Hannah Simone, and Allison Tolman are among those joining the roster here as the film takes you on the journey of a camera crew hired at gunpoint by a ragtag team of assassins to take out the world’s most infamous hitman. The film is opening on Ultra VOD on September 22 before releasing in select theaters and on demand on October 20. Saban Films acquired the rights in July. Check out the trailer.

Teasers For Oleg Stepchenko’s THE JOURNEY TO CHINA Boasts Sweeping Visuals And Big Scale Action And Adventure
There’s not a whole lot of consistency here with the current campaign for Oleg Stepchenko’s new epic, The Journey To China. The film is, however, slated for a local release from NBC Universal Russia while its biggest appeal come courtesy of its prominent editions, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan, along with the promise of grandiose signature martial arts action as teased in previous videos. Apart from this, it’s actor Jason Flemyng’s stage here reprising his role from the 2014 film, Viy which, in also being helmed by Stepchenko, underwent its own evolution hampered by a number of issues. Flemyng returns to the role of cartographer Jonathan Green as he’s commissioned by the Czar to go on another adventure – one that ultimately lands him in China where he’ll crosspaths with Asian princesses, mystical creatures, skilled warriors and a Dragon King for good measure. I’m sure Chan and Schwarzenegger, and Rutger […]
TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY 3D – A Family Of Two And Their Killer Cyborg Companion Fend Off The Apocalypse In The New Trailer For The 90’s Sci-Fi Action Classic!
I was but a toddler when director James Cameron’s Terminator was released, and it would be years before I could ever see it on VHS. That said, I saw a televised edit which familiarized me enough to garner excitement for its explosive sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day. I guess you could say it’s the film that drew me as a moviegoer for years to come having fallen in love with the action genre and the output of titles at the time and before, inherently earning me as an Arnold Schwarzenegger fan among millions. And so with the years that have passed as production label Carolco dissolved, it’s rather unfortunate that the Terminator franchise floundered all the same and I contribute this to the lack of consistency as seen with the rotating door of actors playing the key role of human resistance leader John Connor. Discounting actor Michael Edwards who cameos […]
AFTERMATH: Watch The Official Trailer For The Dramatic New Thriller Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger
His prospects as a reality TV host, there’s always room for another Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Alas, scooch over and make way for Aftermath from Blitz helmer Eliott Lester and a release date set for April 7. SYNOPSIS: Inspired by real events, AFTERMATH tells a story of guilt and revenge after an air traffic controller’s error causes the death of a construction foreman’s wife and daughter. Following the devastating plane crash, the two strangers’ lives become inextricably bound together. Worth noting is his most recent zombie thriller, Maggie which continues to be a high mark in his career in the last few years next to the usual action and spectacle. Alas, expect a possible return to the fray with the likes of Stallone for other endeavors in the coming years, but let’s enjoy this portion of the ride. It’s what makes film such fun and the trailer below… my goodness. It’s […]
