Fantastic Fest XX Review: HIDE AND GO SHRIEK Delivers Without Reinventing The Wheel
Hide and Go Shriek will be available on Blu-ray and 4K UHD in October from Terror Vision and recently screened at the twentieth edition of Fantastic Fest.
These days, Adam Wingard may best known for giving us giant CGI apes and lizards punching each other in the face, but long before Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hit our big screens, he was dabbling in horror. In 2014 he delivered the excellent horror-thriller, The Guest, and in 2011 he burst onto the slasher scene with the superb YOU’RE NEXT. Well now we can all sit back and enjoy You’re Next in gorgeous 4K (or standard Blu-Ray, if that’s your preference) when UK-based distributor, Second Sight Films, releases the film with all the bells and whistles on August 19th. Second Sight are at the top of the Blu-Ray game at the moment. Their releases have physical media fans drooling the moment they’re announced, and rightly so. Check our the special features on this bad boy! Special Features New 4K restoration and HDR Dolby Vision grade approved by Director Adam Wingard Dual format […]
It’s a great time to be alive if you’re a Hong Kong cinema fans. 88 Films have announced three new Blu-Ray releases for September 10th, including an unsung gem of kung fu cinema. The announcement includes TO KILL A MASTERMIND, THE SHADOW BOXING and THE GOLDEN LOTUS. As a genre fan, it’s incredible to see these Blu-Ray companies picking up some of the more obscure Shaw Brothers titles. To Kill a Mastermand, in particular, has only previously been available via shoddy bootleg DVD, so for that one to finally get a release really is something special. You can read the synopsis and view the cover art for these upcoming releases below: Although most famous for their kung fu movies, Hong Kong’s legendary Shaw Brothers studio made more than just chop socky; taken from a (famously saucy) classic novel, Golden Lotus is an epic tale of a passionate – and sometimes destructive – love […]
Terror Vision is doing the Lord’s work. Not only are they releasing a steady stream of rare horror gems; they’ve well and truly dipped their toes into kung fu cinema. Two months ago they released the quirky Barry Chan flick, Game of Killers, and this month we get a Blu Ray of the Yuen Siu Tien (Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow) starring old school gem, AN OLD KUNG FU MASTER. In full remastered glory, no less. Those that don’t know Yuen Siu Tien may have head of one of his sons – legendary direction and fight choreographer, Yuen Woo Ping (The Matrix, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Drgon). In fact, all of his sons are established names in Hong Kong action cinema and, collectively, are known as the Yuen Clan. Yuen Siu Tien starred in almost 350 films during his lengthy career, including countless kung fu classics. Sadly, An Old Kung Fu Master was the […]
Controversy isn’t really something one might associate with the kung fu cinema genre. The infamous “Cantonese comedy” found in the classics of yesteryear may be a little on the distasteful side, but it’s easy to say “It’s a product of its time” and move on with your day. However, one martial arts film sticks out like a sore thumb when it comes to distastefulness – 1980’s THE CRIPPLED MASTERS. Over the years, this one’s only been accessible on VHS and DVD’s that were basically shoddy VHS rips, but now, for the the first time, it gets a crisp, remastered Blu Ray from Film Masters. Why the controversy? The Crippled Masters stars Frankie Shum (Shun Chung-Chuen) and Jack Conn (Thomas Hong Chiu-Ming), two disabled martial artists as the titular “masters” and focuses heavily on their impairments. Whether the film celebrates inclusivity or not is purely up to the viewer, but it’s safe to […]
Later this Month, Neon Eagle Video brings one of the most iconic examples of ninja cheese to Blu-Ray in the form of 1985’s NINJA TERMINATOR. And they’re bringing all the bells and whistles. Ninja Terminator is as infamous as martial arts movies come; directed by “cut-and-paste” master, Godfrey Ho. It features Garfield phones, Korean super kicker, Hwang Jang Lee, in a blonde wig and Richard Harrison, who went on to be one of the most well-known ninja actors in cinematic history. And rightfully so. His filmography is bonkers. Previously only avaiable via shoddy VHS rips, Neon Eagle delivers a beautiful remaster from a 4K scan and a host of special features. Including: Disc 1 (Blu-ray): Ninja Terminator Restored from a 4K scan of the negative / 1080p presentation English language audio Optional English SDH subtitles 2:39:1 / 90 minutes / All Region / 1985 / Director – Godfrey Ho Extras: Audio commentary by […]
Eureka Entertainment continue their long line of stellar Blu Ray releases with the upcoung double-pack of Karate Bullfighter and Karate Bearfighter. Both films star the iconic Japanese badass, Sonny Chiba (The Street Fighter), and are based on the Manga, Karate Baka Ichidai, which ran 1971 to 1977 (and was later adapted into an anime series). Directed by Kazuhiko Yamaguchi, director of the fan favorite, Sister Street Fighter, the films focus on Masutatsu “Mas” Ōyama, the world reknowned karate master and Sonny Chiba’s real-life teacher: In Karate Bullfighter (or Champion of Death), a karate tournament is crashed by an enigmatic martial artist calling himself Ōyama (Chiba), who arrives in tattered rags and beats all who dare challenge him. But Ōyama’s entrance into the world of karate has unforeseen consequences, and soon he is fighting for far more than sporting victory. Then, in Karate Bearfighter, Ōyama is expelled from the karate community for refusing to pull his punches. With nowhere […]
ARCHENEMY is hard to classify. It’s partially a superhero tale. The main character afterall, Max (played by Joe Manganiello), certainly thinks he’s one. Buy him a few drinks at the local bar and he’ll spout off tales of space cities, giant robots, and evil scientists. He’ll also tell you how he was thrown from that dimension, where he was practically a god, into ours where he is now just a powerless, broken-down wino. ARCHENEMY is also a gritty drama, at least that’s how it feels for Hamster (Skylan Brooks) and his sister, Melissa (Jessica Allain), two young adults trying to survive in a world on their own. Hamster dreams of being a journalist and Melissa- she’s only concerned with keeping food on their table, even if it means working for the local drug kingpin (Glenn Howerton). When Hamster stumbles across Max in an alley, he sees a chance at […]
Fun fact: The not so fun fact that some people probably still don’t have Netflix. That was me about over a year and change ago until this year through a much needed assist from a long distance friend, but I, for one, can understand the brouhaha of somethings being solely exclusive to the popular streaming VoD company. One of those things being, of course, Marvel’s Daredevil since it took off in 2015 for the first of a new slate of Marvel shows leading up to The Defenders and ultimately, Punisher taking its own route. The second season aired this Spring and much to our own approval, though still leaving non-Netflix-and-Chillers in the dark, save for what they could already scrounge together from the leaked fight scenes and drama bits around the web. That sort of thing is hard to resist. I get it. That said, Disney is here to tell […]
Much to the delight of anyone fond of Arakawa Hiromu’s 2001 manga, Fullmetal Alchemist, some pretty big things are about to happen within the next few years. One of those includes a live-action from Warner Bros. Japan as production begins this month for a 2017 release. The other? A fully-fledged Blu-Ray packaging of Mizushima Seiji’s 2003 animated rendition of the manga, of with 970 have been made available for fans in the U.K. at All The Anime and Zavvi. The specifics are available below along with photos of the artwork to encase it, as well as its latest trailer just beneath ahead of its October opening. (Hat tip to Ard Vijn at Twitchfilm for the tip!) Synopsis: Innocence and flesh were sacrificed when two young brothers ignored the laws of Alchemy in an attempt to resurrect their mother. The horrors they recklessly unleashed that night marked the beginning of a […]
Oh boy, this is pretty exciting for a Toku fan like me.If you guys don’t know what Toku is, it’s short for Tokusatsu; a very popular genre of TV (and movie, kinda) in Japan, which is primarily live-action drama with special effects. This houses a lot of the sci-fi stuff from Godzilla to my all time favorite, Kamen Rider. With the 45th anniversary of the original Kamen Rider series next year, Toei will be releasing a 4-box set Bluray for it. It will include all 98 episodes since Kamen Rider Niigo comes in halfway through the series though the character has been a protagonist from the start. The thing is, this is a deluxe pack and with its deluxe status comes deluxe price tag. Supposedly, the first 3 box sets are priced at 34,560 yen ($278.24 US), while the 4th boxed sets costs 27,000 yen ($217.37 US). Yikes. So I […]
I’ve written and rambled to almost no end about the Fast And Furious franchise, and at this point, I think director James Wan‘s latest installment with Furious 7 is in no commercial danger of failing at the box office. This franchise has long been a hit having turned from a standalone action thriller into a sprawling saga of epic proportions that continues to stand the test of time. Probably the most fascinating thing will be observing at least one half of this new film with a digitally inserted Paul Walker who departed us in late 2013 halfway through the production, and watching how this will affect the story when it commenses on April 3 in theaters and IMAX. For this, there’s plenty of reason to appreciate what’s been done here ahead of how Universal Pictures, as well as this amazing cast plan on delivering the rest of this epic tale […]
2014 is the year that fans of manga author Ghost In The Shell get to partake in the 25th anniversary of the original manga’s release. The celebration is taking shape in one form or another, particularly in Japan where fans of the popular graphic novel get to take a gander at an entire exhibit between now and September 8 at Hanshin Department Store in Umeda, Osaka, Japan. Meanwhile, fans overseas will also be getting their party on for a forthcoming re-release of the popular award-winning animated 1995 feature film from Oshii Mamoru on September 27 theatrically in the U.K.. Accordingly, Empire unveiled the poster to promote the limited event which you can check out below. SYNOPSIS: Set in the year 2029 and following World Wars III and IV, a Japanese-led Asian block dominates world affairs. The alliance maintains its international supremacy through its elite security force whose cybernetically enhanced operatives […]
When Dredd underperformed at the box office late last year, it was a heavily-dealt blow to cult fans everywhere who not only love the franchise, but also paid great credibility to director Pete Travis and screenwriter Alex Garland for their unique vision of the future post apocalyptic action sci-fi crime story with action star Karl Urban in the lead. While Dredd may have faltered in efforts for a sequel, the film did exceptionally well in Blu-Ray, DVD and digital download sales. Moreover, in addition to the work of independent filmmaker Oliver Holingdale and Dredd producer Adi Shankar working on their own short film projects, Dredd is also being promised a sequel by way of an impending comic book release. Fans can still purchase the film, as it is still being newly relased throughout the world depending on where you live. This summer, Japan is slated to release the film domestically […]
DEATH GRIP, a 2011 co-production of The Stunt People and Action Pact Entertainment and finally released on DVD and Blu-Ray in 2012, is by far one of the best independent martial arts action movies you will ever see. It has elements of comedy, love, tragedy, and classic fight sequences in a story written, edited, choreographed and directed by Eric Jacobus. The film also stars Nathan Hoskins, LaChe Milo, Rebecca Ahn, Caitlyn Corson and martial arts action star and EYESHINE frontman Johnny Yong Bosch, along with SP veteran stunt performers such as Cheslea Steffensen, Ray Carbonel, Alvin Hsing, Shaun Finney, Lucas Okuma and Edward Kahana Jr. Trust and believe when I say that this film took more than everything that Eric had, along with the generous contributions of others to help make this film happen. Furthermore, having previously seen various shortfilms by SP, and their very first feature film, Contour, after […]
