Cambodian cinemas are only a few days away from the release of Jimmy Henderson’s newest effort, KTV: Killing Time Violently. The film marks another successive entry in the action arena for director Jimmy Henderson, who has become more prominently known in the last several years for placing Cambodia squarely on the radar for a string of stylish beat ’em up thrillers. This includes especially 2017’s Fantasia Festival crowdpleaser, Jailbreak, which became a banner success on Netflix before the streamer’s removal of the film from its catalogue back in May. The film, which featured actor and martial arts duo Jean-Paul Ly and Dara Our as members of tactical unit trapped in a prison and forced to fight for their lives when a prisoner transfer goes awry. “Jailbreak definitely helped me to get my name out there and I am grateful for what it has done for the industry in Cambodia,” says […]

The last few years have been kind of a watershed moment for Cambodian martial art, Bokator. Mark Bochsler’s 2018 documentary, Surviving Bokator, is currently one of the latest milestones in campaigning the sport to its relevancy, and it’s only been screened for select events and channels so there’s no telling when it’ll make the commercial circuit overseas. For now though, at least we get to jam to a little something thanks to actor Dara Our, who’s popped up on occasion with filmmaker Jimmy Henderson taking the reigns with Hanuman, Jailbreak and The Prey. This time, it’s Our himself in the director’s chair for none other than music video debut, “Warriors” (or “Nak Chambang”), produced by Ream Productions and performed by hip hop artist Baly featuring Tom, and the athletes of the Cambodia Kun Bokator Federation, with action sequences by Soy Phannich. The video’s been up since the weekend but Our […]
At some point in the last several years, Cambodia became next in line for contributing to today’s fandom in martial arts action films. Leave it to Jimmy Henderson to pull the necessary weight in recent memory for the release of albeit obscure 2015 vigilante thriller, Hanuman, signaling the arrival of martial artist and debut actor, Dara Our, and his expertise in the centuries’ old fighting style of Bokator. “I can’t make a film without Dara. We started together with nothing. We didnt even have a proper gym to train choreography while prepping for Hanuman.” says Henderson who is now onto their latest and most ambitious project, The Prey, which is currently in production. “He’s always up for challenges. And even though he plays a supporting role have in this film, the fight sequences he will have to do are insane.” The Prey was announced back in January following the local […]
By 2013, French-born Chinese/Cambodian martial artist Jean-Paul Ly was well on his way into a fledgling career in stuntwork after moving to the U.K., although his primary trajectory aimed more toward becoming an actor. It’s a move that couldn’t have been more opportune for Ly whose own growth and progress ultimately found him in good straits with emerging talent out of Cambodia where then-screenwriter Jimmy Henderson and journeying up-and-comer Loy Te were already stirring some fruitful comradery of their own. Thus, with the contribution of the work experience brought on by Henderson’s directorial debut, Hanuman, and the entrance of local actor and martial artist Dara Our, and the proverbial open swing of the door for culminating talent comes action comedy Jailbreak, an abiding and much more commercial opportunity for Cambodian cinema, and incidentally, production company, Kongchak Pictures and Puprom Entertainment. The concept itself arose in earlier teaser posters with a […]
