Close to three decades since efforts to adapt author Jay Bonansinga’s novel wound up in development limbo, a new look at action thriller The Killer’s Game is finally here. Dave Bautista is the man front and center of all the danger and spectacle shepherded heretofore by Day Shift helmer, stuntman-turned-director J.J. Perry. In the new action-comedy THE KILLER’S GAME, when top hitman Joe Flood (Dave Bautista) is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he decides to take matters into his own hands – by taking a hit out on himself. But when the very hitmen he hired also target his ex-girlfriend (Sofia Boutella), he must fend off an army of assassin colleagues and win back the love of his life before it’s too late. The official trailer below also hands you the key twist that emboldens our protagonist to take up arms and fight for his life. This comes amply packaged […]
In an update six years in the making, Day Shift helmer J.J. Perry has been announced to adapt Red 5 Comic publication, Afterburn for the big screen. Perry replaces Carter and The Villainess director Jung Byung-gil who was previously attached to direct the film which at the time cast Fallen franchise star Gerard Butler. Instead, that spot now goes to Dave Bautista who reteams with Perry once more following their recent completion on hitman thriller, The Killer’s Game for Lionsgate. Casting also includes Samuel L. Jackson for the film which, according to Deadline’s Andreas Wiseman, will go before the EFM floor in Berlin beginning next week, with Black Bear handling world sales and CAA Media Finance launching domestic. Per Wiseman, Afterburn “is set ten years after a solar flare has wiped out technology across the globe. Bautista will play ex-soldier Jake who works as a treasure hunter recovering valuable objects […]
It’s been more than twenty years for any move to cinema with Jay Boninsaga’s 1997 novel, The Killer’s Game. The film finally has a home with Lionsgate launching international sales for the adaptation which now has stunt professional and second unit director J.J. Perry lined-up to direct his second feature since Netflix hit vampire actioner, Day Shift with Jamie Foxx. Filming begins this summer for Perry with Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise actor Dave Bautista starring as Joe Flood as a principled veteran assassin who learns he is dying. Thinking his days are numbered and refusing suicide as it goes against his Catholic principles, he stakes a multi-million dollar prize on his own life, only to realize two things: One – that he’s been misdiagnosed and is still in perfect health, and Two – his girlfriend is preganant. Now the two will have to race across Europe in order to […]
Drew Pearce will reunite with Hotel Artemis co-star Dave Bautista for Cooler, a new action thriller out of FilmNation Entertainment’s new Infrared production label which films in Summer of 2023. The film is the first title to emerge in a first-look deal etched out a few weeks ago between Infrared and Bautista’s Dogbone Entertainment banner. Cooler “follows a South Beach bouncer Ray Sagona, played by Bautista, who is on the brink of finding redemption and getting his family back. But when a drug-filled safe is stolen from the club he works at, Ray is blackmailed into finding it before the Miami PD narcotics bureau comes to retrieve it on Sunday night. Now, as his past and present collide in ever-more dangerous ways, Ray must survive an epic 36-hour odyssey across Miami Beach to get that safe back… one final Herculean task on his journey towards absolution.” Pearce will direct from […]
I’m not a huge horrorhead like our own Christina Ortega Phillips, though I always prefer a good thriller to bide my time more than anything. For this, you can trust that a zombie movie like Army Of The Dead is something I would’ve avoided as nothing short of what sounded like the title of another direct-to-Walmart action flick were it not for the huge names attached – including one Zack Snyder, best known for rallying a loyal cult following with graphic novel-style flexes such as 300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch, coupled with the kind of signature “messy” flair he applies to his craft. Going into his latest movie, I’m reluctant to dive too far into an in-depth review, lest I get roped into the Twitter drama over Snyder’s creative decisions; I spent a good few hours back-and-forth online looking up opinions by fellow colleagues and movie fans, and even some […]
Dave Jeremy Kay reports at Screen Daily that D.J. Caruso’s new novel adaptation, The Killer’s Game, will commence principal photography in December. Actress Morena Baccarin (Deadpool, Deadpool 2) and actor Kris Wu (xXx: Return Of Xander Cage, Valerian) are both up for roles joining Ice Cube (Ride Along, Ride Along 2) and lead actor Dave Bautista (Blade Runner 2049). Inspired by Jay Bonansinga’s 1997 novel, the action adventure thriller sees Bautista as a principled veteran assassin who learns he is dying. Thinking his days are numbered and refusing suicide as it goes against his Catholic principles, he stakes a multi-million dollar prize on his own life, only to realize two things: One – that he’s been misdiagnosed and is still in perfect health, and Two – his girlfriend is preganant. Now the two will have to race across Europe in order to outrun the cadre of hungry gamesmen now out […]
Signature Films, LLC has re-teamed with Dave Bautista and longtime manager Jonathan Meisner’s Dream Bros. Entertainment for new action thriller, Traphouse. The team previously partnered on the 2018 action film Final Score. Developed by Bautista with a script by Gary Scott Thompson (Universal’s Fast And Furious franchise), Traphouse centers on an undercover DEA agent and his partner who embark on a game of cat and mouse with an audacious, and surprising group of thieves: their own rebellious teenagers who have begun robbing from a dangerous Cartel, using their parents’ tactics and top-secret intel. The deal was negotiated by Signature’s Marc Goldberg and Sarah Gabriel and Fourth Wall Management’s Jon Huddle; Craig Emanuel (Paul Hastings) on behalf of Thompson; CAA and Jay Rosenthal on behalf of Dream Bros. “Traphouse is a project that we’ve been working on for years.” noted Bautista in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be working with Marc […]
Cameras are officially rolling in Albuquerque, New Mexico for Watchmen, Man Of Steel and Dawn Of The Dead helmer Zack Snyder’s new Netflix action horror, Army Of The Dead. Actors Omari Hardwick (Power, Sorry to Bother You), Chris D’Elia (You, Man on Fire), Garret Dillahunt (Widows, No Country For Old Men) and Samantha Win (Arrow, Justice League) join the cast led by Stuber star Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi and Huma Qureshi. Storied by Snyder who penned the script with Joby Harold and Shay Hatten, the film centers on a band of mercenaries who set out to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted as a zombie outbreak fully underway in Las Vegas. Also starring are Hiroyuki Sanada (Avengers: Endgame, Westworld, Minamata), Matthias Schweighöfer (You Are Wanted, Resistance), Raúl Castillo (We The Animals, Vida), Nora Arnezeder (Maniac, Mozart in the Jungle) and Rich Cetrone (Batman […]
Ice Cube is reportedly negotiating to star opposite actor Dave Bautista in D.J. Caruso’s upcoming adaptation of Jay Bonansinga’s 1997 novel, Killer’s Game. The project, according to Mike Fleming Jr. at Deadline, marks the latest development following 20 years of languishing between hands of studios and directors who’ve passed it up, including Jason Statham. Bautista, who was cast back in April, will star as Joe Flood, a principled veteran assassin who learns he is dying. Thinking his days are numbered and refusing suicide as it goes against his Catholic principles, he stakes a multi-million dollar prize on his own life, only to realize that he’s been misdiagnosed and is still in perfect health. Now he’s forced into a breakneck fight for survival against hungry gamesmen out for blood and a six-figure boost. Cube, as the report elucidates, will play one of the gamesmen who will hunt Flood down until game […]
If a standard short trailer for John Herzfeld’s Escape Plan: The Extractors wasn’t enough, then how about a red-band trailer for all your Stallone and Bautista needs? Both action stars headline the latest and seemingly final installment which unleashes the beast on July 2 on Digital 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Screen legend Sylvester Stallone kicks this explosive action tale into high gear. After security expert Ray Breslin (Stallone) is hired to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Hong Kong tech mogul from a formidable Latvian prison, Breslin’s girlfriend (Jaime King) is also captured. Now he and his team, which includes Dave Bautista and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, must pull off a deadly rescue mission to confront their sadistic foe and save the hostages before time runs out. Also starring are Jamie King, Max Zhang and Devon Sawa.
This is me catching up on some trailerage of late with Michael Dowse’s latest action comedy, Stuber. The latest red-band trailer is making the rounds and I’m actually already sold on this one. Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani look and Iko Uwais look great together and with any luck, the Stuber crew took some notes after Uwais’s previous stint in Mile 22…and no, I’m still not over it. When a mild-mannered Uber driver named Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) picks up a passenger (Dave Bautista) who turns out to be a cop hot on the trail of a brutal killer, he’s thrust into a harrowing ordeal where he desperately tries to hold onto his wits, his life and his five-star rating. Also starring are Natalie Morales, Betty Gilpin, Jimmy Tatro, Mira Sorvino and Karen Gillan.
Director Zack Snyder’s new zombie action thriller for Netflix, Army Of The Dead, is officially set for a July shoot according to announcements from the streaming service as of Tuesday. The Dawn Of The Dead, Justice League, Watchmen and Man Of Steel helmer is also scripting with Joby Harold and Shay Hatten. Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. Casting is also complete with Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Sweetbitter), Ana De La Reguera (Everything, Everything, Goliath), Theo Rossi (Luke Cage, Sons of Anarchy) and Huma Qureshi (Kaala, Viceroy’s House, Gangs of Wasseypur, Badlapur), all joining actor Dave Bautista who is starring as of April. Snyder is also producing with spouse and partner Deborah Snyder for The Stone Quarry with Wesley Coller. Bautista name will not […]
The past week or so saw fans hastily taking heed to a leaked European trailer for John Herzfeld’s Escape Plan: The Extractors. It was a fun few minutes but it was worth at least waiting for the official U.S. trailer to arrive, with an official date set for July 2 on Digital 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Five years in and a franchise that surprisingly carried over well for fans, Escape […]
Remember last February when Jason Statham was set to star in D.J. Caruso’s adaptation of Jay Bonansinga’s 1997 novel, Killer’s Game? Well, that’s over and done, and as long as it takes for proper developments to cook with feature films, we now have word from Jeff Sneider at Collider that Dave Bautista (Hotel Artemis, Blade Runner 2049) is taking a stab at the pic. The fourth and latest actor known to be chosen for the long-gestating project, Bautista will star as Joe Flood, a principled, veteran assassin who learns he is dying. Thinking his days are numbered, he stakes a multi-million dollar prize on his own life, only to realize that he’s been misdiagnosed and is still in perfect health, and is now forced into a breakneck fight for survival against hungry gamesmen out for blood and a six-figure boost. Steve Richards will produce with Andrew Lazar of Mad Chance. […]
Director Yuen Woo-ping takes the mantle for actor and martial artist Max Zhang’s latest solo feat, Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy, a fresh and livening underdog tale spun-off from the current Ip Man trilogy long prior to the fourth film’s release this summer. Zhang has made some great strides in the last few years, including at least a few Hollywood credits to his belt – this, after proving formidably as a major seller to fans of the genre long since stunt-doubling Zhang Ziyi on the set of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Fans of the Ip Man franchise won’t feel too left out as Yuen’s spin-off assures with the occssional flashback here and there to cosign the new venture that otherwise expands the commercial Ip Man cinematic universe. Hong Kong is where our story is set, still under British rule, and a system of government that’s become inherently corrupt. Following […]
Director Michael Dowse’s latest offering, Stuber, was already the subject of some mixed-to-positive reception after screening at SXSW last month. The rip-roaring action comedy, led by actor Kumail Nanjiani and the bustling feats of actor/wrestler Dave Bautista, has since been dated for a July 12 from Fox and now we have a look at the first official trailer above which looks all sorts of fun from what we can gather. Indeed this looks every bit of fun as it should. I also don’t doubt for a second that that’s Iko Uwais in the second half wearing a breathing mask. […]
One look at the latest trailer for Peter Segal’s new odd couple spy romp, My Spy and you needn’t further proof that Dave Bautista is a man who loves his job. Equally, he plays a character terrible at his job and his last shot at greatness is now in the hands of a pre-teen with a penchant for jelly sandwiches and being a smartass. Oh yeah… the chemistry here is on point with these two. MY SPY follows JJ a hardened CIA operative (Dave Bautista) who has been demoted and finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, named Sophie (Chloe Coleman) where he has been sent undercover begrudgingly to surveil her family. When Sophie discovers hidden cameras in her apartment she uses her tech savviness to locate where the surveillance operation is set. In exchange for not blowing JJ’s cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with […]
Collider and EW were kind enough on Thursday to drop some gems for upcoming action comedy, Stuber. Michael Dowse (Goon, What If) directs this latest feat which spotlights Kumail Nanjiani and MCU star Dave Bautista ahead of its preliminary screening at SXSW next week. Directed by Michael Dowse, this action-comedy from 20th Century Fox also stars Iko Uwais, Natalie Morales, Betty Gilpin, Jimmy Tatro, Mira Sorvino and Karen Gillan.
