For all the flack that Hollywood gets for rehashing material, you have to give it to its elements when they’re combined accordingly, and in a way that resoundingly fits.
After winning hearts and minds at CinemaCon this week, Warner Bros. Pictures’ continued onward with its now public campaign for the October 4 release, Joker. The latest incarnation from Todd Phillips now presents a non-universal take on the iconic DC Comics villain that might even have you pining over a few “what would’ve been’s” or “could’ve been’s” with this new venture starring Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role.
The last we heard on the upcoming untitled Joker movie from The Hangover director Todd Phillips, Alec Baldwin pretty much came and left from the role of Thomas Wayne, patriarch of the Wayne family whose tragic fallout would birth the rise of the Dark Knight himself, Batman. Granted, this film doesn’t share space with Warner Bros.’ current DCEU timetable, and so therein lies the question of just what will apply with this particular film.
Joaquin Phoenix, (You Were Never Really Here) is officially tapped to star as the Joker in The Hangover helmer Todd Philips’ new take on the DC Comics villain. Borys Kit’s Heat Vision blog confirmed news at The Hollywood Reporter with word that a September production start in New York City has been given a go from Warner Bros. Pictures.
Lynne Ramsay’s new crime thriller, You Were Never Really Here, is just a few months out from its U.S. release. Between now and then, much will be ado with its star, actor Joaquin Phoenix, who is now the center of new discussions surrounding Warner Bros.’s upcoming standalone Joker film.
As Variety’s exclusive on Thursday notes, further studio negotiations remain pending while the actor himself thought it over and ultimately agreed to star in the film after meeting with Phillips late last year. Phillips will pen the script with Scott Silver to shape the narrative of the 80’s set story in the gritty vein of Martin Scorsese titles like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The King Of Comedy, tackling the origins of how the Clown Prince Of Gotham came to be.
The new film will arrive under a forthcoming banner of DC Comics to further expand on stories yet to be told in the cinematic universe. Before all else, actor Jared Leto is expected to continue the role into the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel after appearing in the 2016 summer hit.
An intriguing part is the setting. The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.
Kicking and punching, bleeding, pain, getting tossed through windows, etc. – Such is the message you get if you’re a baddie and you cross paths with action cinema favorite, Jason Statham, now front and center in the new movie, Wild Card, now due for a December 7, 2014 January 30, 2015 release in the U.S.. The film comes nearly thirty years after author William Goldman’s 1985 Warner Books publication, “Heat”, led to its first film adaptation a year later with then-lead actor Burt Renyolds, which turned out to be more controversial in its troubled state of production at the time.
For this revamp however, Statham is producing under his SJ Heat Productions, LLC banner with Steve Chasman, reuniting Statham with The Expendables 2 and The Mechanic helmer Simon West. The film is also getting released internationally as Joker. Of course, that is unless you’re not getting kicked, punched and thrown through windows by this cockney screenfighting badass, you’re probably not laughing. Yes, Statham is back, and he means some R-rated, pleasantly violent and vengeful business!
SYNOPSIS:
Nick Wild, an ex-marine and gambling addict, goes into the protection business but plans to leave Las Vegas for a better life. When his last girlfriend, Holly, is found beaten and left for dead, he agrees to help revenge her. He will soon discover that the guilty man is Danny DeMarco, a member of a powerful mob family.
Stanley Tucci, Sofía Vergara, Milo Ventimiglia, Michael Angarano and Anne Heche round out the cast with a script by Goldman and action direction by Corey Yuen (The Transporter, Rise Of The Legend) and choreography by Brad Martin (Safe, Homefront) and Ron Yuan (Black Salt, Black And White 2). It’s not often certain titles get circulated that awaken people to the current state of action movies around the globe. Such is the case with the Republic of Kazakhstan which seems as good a place to start as any with a few films on the way from that region, including known screenwriter Talgad Zhanibekov‘s directorial debut, Joker.
