Hmk. Let’s recap a bit, shall we?… Last time we were discussing anything regarding a release date for what would have been a Pacific Rim sequel for next Spring was last April. There comes a time in your life when your name is John Boyega, your most prolific role to date was the billion dollar smash hit sci-fi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and you’re suddenly a household name that studios are now paying attention to. Well, for this young actor, things are once again booming now that he’s well onto the forthcoming sequel which opens next year reprising his role and piling up on other prospects with word that the actor, via his own Twitter account is set to lead the cast of Pacific Rim 2. Sequel expectations for dorector Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi monster epic, Pacific Rim, have been somewhat of a rollercoaster. The film generally didn’t do well enough to greenlight a follow-up right away, but it ultimately earned a cult following from fans who’ve simply wanted to see more. A year later, both del Toro and Legendary’s own Thomas Tull invested updates of their own before announcing an April 2017 release (before it was pushed back four months), while plans were in motion to develop graphic novels and an animated series to tie-in to both films. Director Guillermo Del Toro is currently tapped to direct an adaptation of the 1967 medical thriller, Fantastic Voyage for 20th Century Fox as of news last week. That said, the update brought preceding concerns regarding whether or not Del Toro would be able to move forward with the long-awaited Pacific Rim 2, a sequel to the Jaeger V. Kaiju monster cult hit. Essentially, the word was that the film, previously clocked for an April 2017 date, was canned or otherwise indefinitely shelved. Devastating, yes. If you’re wondering at all why it is that Crimson Peak helmer Guillermo Del Toro hasn’t made a peep about Pacific Rim 2, you would be forgiven for thinking he was actually busy working on it. In that case, sorry to burst your bubble. THR now brings news that those efforts are off the table indefinitely with the director now in talks to boarding a remake of the 1966 film, Fantastic Voyage. 20th Century Fox and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment are backing the project with a story initially set during the Cold War when a group scientists are tasked with miniaturizing themselves down to atomic size to save the life of a scientist after a near-fatal attempt on his life. Despite all current hopes for a third installment to the Sherlock Holmes franchise, instead, director Guy Ritchie will instead be working under Warner Bros. on the forthcoming production of a new six-film saga for King Arthur. The initial report came back in April, just a decade after director Antoine Fuqua released his own cinematic take on the legendary British king back in 2004 with actor Clive Owen in the lead. An attempted reboot from Warner Bros. went through several transitions starting in 2010 with different actors, screenwriters and directors ever since. Four years later with Ritchie set to direct from a script by Awake (2007) scribe Joby Harold and producers Akiva Goldsman and Tory Tunnell attached, Deadline brings the official first casting news for actor Charlie Hunnam in the title role. A sequel to last year’s modest blockbuster success story, Pacific Rim, has been in development for a while now. It wasn’t going to happen right away since earning only a little over half its budget back, but I suppose grossing that same number four times over globally was pretty helpful. But most importantly, director Guillermo Del Toro wanted to do it, and so did Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull. And following up with earlier reports of the director drafting a sequel with writer Zak Penn, a new video announcement is available online for the targeted theatrical release date of April 7, 2017 for Pacific Rim 2, preceded by an animated series set in the film’s universe. There were a lot of mixed reactions upon last year’s release of director Guillermo del Toro‘s most recent robo-juggernaut vs. monster spectacle, Pacific Rim. The film did okay at the box office, but not great, so the chance of a sequel remained a bit blurry thereafter. And yes, they still are, although that hasn’t stopped del Toro from doing his best to put a new script together for the sequel with screenwriter Zak Penn. “I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn,” del Toro says. “We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around.
