The film stars Matilda Lutz in the title role from a script by Tasha Huo.
Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man And The Wasp, Ready Player One, upcoming Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City) will take up the sword in Red Sonja for Millennium Films. Casting comes following the attachment of Netflix/Legendary’s upcoming animated Tomb Raider series writer/exec producer, Tasha Huo. The move marks the latest film effort since Richard Fleischer’s Brigitte Nielsen/Arnold Schwarzenegger, 1985 adaptation of the on-going 1970s comic from Dynamite Entertainment; Fleischer’s movie bombed critically and commerically but sustained a cult following over the years through merchandising, and a TV incarnation adaptation in the 1990s, years before news arose of remake efforts as of 2018. The character was originally recreated by Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor with partial inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s own shortstory work from the 1930s, and centers on a young girl from the Western Hyrkanian steppes who trains and sets out to seek revenge for her own rape and the […]

The past few years were thought to have seen some progress with hopeful revival of MGM’s Marvel classic, Red Sonja with the likes of Bryan Singer. That angle appears to be no more with Singer no longer attached to the languishing project that’s been close to a decade in the making and now with news that Jill Soloway (Amazon’s Transparent series) will pen and helm the feature. The update is a move back to the drawing board for Millennium Films who announced efforts back in 2017 with Cinelou Films. Ashley Edward Miller was later tapped to pen a draft the following year prior to last Fall’s attachment of Singer which led to surmounting blowback from critics in the wake of a raft of multiple sexual assault allegations and reports of the director’s erratic behavior and eventual departure from the set of Bohemian Rhapsody for which he is still credited as […]
I sat and thought from time to time about who should star in a remake of Red Sonja. I’m thoroughly sold on the idea of casting either Rebecca Ferguson or even Jessica Chastain for title. That said, depending on how far things go, I’m slightly confident that Sophie Turner would suit the role given having shared the set prior with X-Men: Apocalypse helmer Bryan Singer. Word from Heat Vision at THR states the beleagured helmer of upcoming Bohemian Rhapsody is being tapped to direct the film for Millenium. The character was originally recreated by Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor with partial inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s own shortstory work from the 1930s. The crux of Red Sonja centers on a young girl from the Western Hyrkanian steppes who trains and sets out to seek revenge for her own rape and the murder of her family. Richard Fleischer’s original 1985 […]
MGM/UA The process of getting a Red Sonja film re-adaptation off the ground has been slow to pass since 2010, until news broke last November that Millenium and Cinelou were on board and shepherding the picture into fruition. Development had also seen a revolving door of its own with directors and writers come and gone over the years, which now brings exclusive word from Deadline on Wednesday with Ashley Edward Miller (Andromeda, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, X-Men: First Class, Thor, Black Sails) now set to pen the script. The character was originally recreated by Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor with partial inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s own shortstory work from the 1930s, and centers on a young girl from the Western Hyrkanian steppes who trains and sets out to seek revenge for her own rape and the murder of her family. Richard Fleischer’s 1985 adaptation with Bridgette Nielsen and co-star Arnold […]
MGM/UA More than thirty years since the actress Bridgette Nielsen’s iconic portrayal of fantasy Marvel character Red Sonja, reports at Deadline have it on good terms that Millenium Media are back on top of efforts to reboot the classic IP for the big screen. “We have been waiting for the right time for this remake, and with the success of Wonder Woman, the audience has spoken. They want female heroes,” said [Avi] Lerner. Richard Fleischer’s adaptation initially bombed critically and commerically but sustained a cult following over the years through its merchandising and a television adaptation in the 1990s. The […]
