THE ADVENTURERS Sets Course For An August 18 U.S. Release

Well Go USA has been a perpetual force in Asian cinema acquisitions. Director Stephen Fung’s new movie, The Adventurers, is just one such title to find itself in the throes of an international release one week apart from China and with a date now set for August 18 in the States, it’s full-speed ahead for this contemporary John Woo nod. In this slick, high-stakes action-adventure, the world’s top thieves – the infamous and charismatic Cheung (Andy Lau), his former partner in crime, Xiao (Tony Yang), and beautiful chameleon Ye (Shu Qi) – join forces to pull off the heist of a lifetime. But when they find themselves pursued across Europe by a legendary French detective (Jean Reno), they’ll have to take their game to the next level. To say that Well Go USA has been on a roll this year with Asian acquisitions is a certified understatement. I’m optimistic going into next year for that reason but for fans looking forward to the release of Stephen Fung’s latest nod to John Woo in The Adventurers, with any luck the wait won’t belong. The Adventurers tells the story of an ex-con/thief who steals two priceless jewelries at the Cannes Film Festival. After his recent release from prison, infamous thief Cheung Tan (Andy Lau) plots a heist with his partners Xiao Bao (Tony Yang) and Ye Hong (Shu Qi) to steal precious jewels in Europe, while French detective Pierre (Jean Reno), who has been hot on Cheung’s trails for many years, must capture this gang of thieves on one draft. Fans of heist thrillers have at least one coming down the pipeline with the release of Stephen Fung’s Once A Thief reimagining, The Adventurers. Aside from Woo-homages there may be, and of course there may be, Fung looks like he’s handled this one prerty well and with a cast looks more than ready to bring something outstanding to the big screen. Sophisticated burglar Dan Zhang (Andy Lau) walks out of prison after a three-year term. Dan reunites with his wingman Po (Yo Yang), an expert in computer hacking and weaponry. They are soon joined by Red (Shu Qi), a beautiful and intelligent chameleon. With action auteur John Woo slowly and surely easing back into headline relevance with his own work, it’s only a worthy to weigh in on filmmaker Stephen Fung now forthcoming with his own humble nod as The Adventurers looks to rekindle remake potential this summer. The film is a reimagining of Woo’s Once A Thief (1991), now the center of an adventure that sees actor Andy Lau in the role of an ex-con freshly out of prison and back in the heist game in timely fashion with actor Jean Reno as the supersleuth hot on his tail. Also starring are actresses Shu Qi and Zhang Jingchu, and actors Eric Tsang and Yi Sha and with a release set for August 11, a new official trailer has finally arrived and quite fleshed out as a broadly-scoped international affair. Stephen Fung’s anticipated Once A Thief revamp, The Adventurers, is finally rolling out some footage in a fresh new teaser ahead of a 2017 release. Actor Andy Lau leads the cast with a story that refurbishes things a bit with regards to its narrative and with producing along with John Woo cohort Terence Chang. Also starring are Shu Qi, Tony Yang and Zhang Jingchu with Jean Reno adding to the film’s international appeal as sampled in the latest trailer which you can view below courtesy of Far East Films. I admit, it took me a few months to get a grip on the fact that The Adventurers and the upcoming reboot of John Woo classic Once A Thief were the same damn movie being directed by Stephen Fung. That said, I can finally sharpen my focus a bit and follow up on the news as it comes, and now with word that filming is currently underway in Prague following the most recent marriage of Fung and the film’s leading lady, actress Shu Qi. The film was announced earlier this year at HKFilmart under joint venture Flagship Entertainment with Fung to direct, and also lists actors Andy Lau and Tony Yang, and actress Zhang Jingchu. Stephen Fung Sets Course For May For THE ADVENTURERS

Flagship Entertainment staked a major claim last week during this year’s Hong Kong Filmart, marking a joint venture between CMC (China Media Capital), Warner Bros. and TVB. The announcement included an inaugural slate of up to twelve titles ranging from various genres and budgets and a select number of them already in tow with cast and/or a chosen director. One of those titles includes The Adventurers, which hosts filmmaker Stephen Fung in the director’s chair with word that production will commence in May with My Beloved Bodyguard and The Monkey King 2 3D co-star Feng Shaofeng starring. Plot details are thin but the Flagship announcement hints at a story centered on an overseas treasure hunt, while an actress and other casting announcements remain pending.
