Gyllenhaal May Replace Hardy For Ayer’s SUICIDE SQUAD
Looks like perfect timing for Nightcrawler star, actor Jake Gyllenhaal whose most recent debut still of his upcoming boxing drama, Southpaw, from Antoine Fuqua (pictured) is currently making the rounds. Director David Ayer‘s forthcoming production of the DC Comics live-action adaptation of Suicide Squad is only several months away from commensing principal photography up over in Canada, and Gyllenhaal’s going to need to apply those movie muscles once again now that actor Tom Hardy is no longer starring.
The Wrap reports that Hardy’s scheduling conflicts between working on The Revenant with helmer Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu prior to joining the promotional tour for Warner Bros. Mad Max: Fury Road between mid-March through May 15 when the latter film releases, possibly leaving room for Gyllenhaal to take his place. Hardy was listed in the official press release late last year for the role of Rick Flag, leader of the titular ragtag team of anti-heroes along with Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, while official word awaits on the potential casting of actress Viola Davis as the oft-antagonistic government overseer of the team, Amanda Waller.
Gyllenhaal previously starred in Ayer‘s 2012 crime drama, End Of Watch, so seeing those two reunite could bring something refreshing to the table for fans. For now, let’s wait and see what happens.
The film is slated for release on August 5, 2016.
Warner Bros. Enlists Its SUICIDE SQUAD Cast
Director David Ayer‘s pending adaptation of DC Comics property, Suicide Squad, is currently awaiting a production start date beginning next year in April through September in Toronto, Canada according to THR. With that in mind, any and all information on casting has been developing and trickling for the past few months now, particularly with lead actor Will Smith in talks, and actor Jared Leto who’s been busy playing coy with the press on all talk related to his addition to the cast as the Joker.
It was probably obvious to some, but nevertheless, Warner Bros. decided to lay skepticism to rest in an official announcement on Tuesday which you can check out below. The current working title will be Bravo 14, with pre-production set for February; As a noteworthy mention, previous reports may indicate further casting additions, which still remain speculative at the moment. For now, read on!
BURBANK, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–An all-star roster of actors has joined Warner Bros. Pictures’ new action adventure “Suicide Squad,” bringing DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen under the direction of David Ayer (“Fury”). The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
The film will star two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Ali,” upcoming “Focus”) as Deadshot; Tom Hardy (“The Dark Knight Rises,” upcoming “Mad Max: Fury Road”) as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” upcoming “Focus,” the “Tarzan” movie) as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Alexander”) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (“Divergent,” upcoming “The Water Diviner”) as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (“Anna Karenina,” upcoming “Pan”) as Enchantress.
In making the announcement, Silverman said, “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
Ayer is also writing the script for “Suicide Squad,” which is being produced by Charles Roven (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) and Richard Suckle (“American Hustle”). Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns are serving as executive producers.

WARRIOR Prepares A Hindi Remake With Lionsgate
The martial arts action genre continues to play heavily in India’s highly productive market despite anyone’s notice of these films beyond their borders. So, it still a delightful surprise to see such films come about, and much to the chagrin of some critics, that includes remakes which are pretty typical in Indian cinema as directors sometimes remake their own films or that of other directors, local or abroad.
In this instance, we take the name Gavin O’Connor whose 2011 feature-length mixed martial arts drama, Warrior, was a critical hit, but flopped in the U.S.. This week, that film falls at at the feet of Bollywood writer and director Karan Malhotra for the Hindi remake with lead actor Sidharth Malhotra (pictured above) and potential addition, action hero Akshay Kumar respectively portraying the roles previously played by Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton.
The original film’s distributors at Lionsgate are producing the remake with Endemol India to retell the story that previously featured fight choreography by J.J. Perry (Haywire, The Expendables 3) and centered on Hardy and Edgerton as two brothers, one a former Marine and the other a former UFC fighter-turned-schoolteacher, on opposite ends of a three-way family rift stemmimg from their abusive childhood at the behest of their father, played by Nick Nolte. Driven by their own motives, the two brothers eventually find themselves competing in the same mixed martial arts tournament with the grand prize of 5 million dollars to the winner.
In my opinion, not a lot of people are very familiar with Indian action cinema as it gets overlooked by a lot of other films from Hollywood, Hong Kong and the like. But with Lionsgate helping out the project, we’ll see how much publicity this one gets in the states. Granted it might gain its footing mostly with filmgoers familiar with Bollywood cinema, but it could go as far as the film festival circuit in North America much like Vidyut Jammwal’s 2013 hit, Commando, and grow its audience from there. But, time will tell.
In the meantime, Malhotra is currently expected to dazzle audiences at home with director Mohit Suri’s latest romantic murder thriller, Ek Villain, which releases natively on June 27. Check out the trailer below!

Tom Hardy Confirmed For SPLINTER CELL
Roughly a year and a half since a press release was issued officially announcing New Regency and Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ live-action adaptation of the popular game, Splinter Cell with actor Tom Hardy set to star, the official word has come in confirming Hardy is now working on the script with director Doug Liman. Liman‘s attachment came as of March this year just months away from the forthcoming release of his new sci-fi action adventure, Edge Of Tomorrow.
In a new report from IGN, Liman attributed a few details about what fans might expect upon the film’s production. “Everything about Splinter Cell will be younger.” he says. “It’s a chance to come up with a new franchise that is fresher and newer and younger, and Tom Hardy is such an incredible actor.”. The Bourne helmer also added “Some of the tropes of the game will for sure be in the film, but also the fun of that is when you lose them. To strip that stuff away and really make the character have to operate without it.“.
Based on the highly acclaimed Ubisoft video game franchise created from a series of books began by late military sci-fi author Tom Clancy, Splinter Cell centers on the story of Sam Fisher, a highly-trained special ops soldier who works in a fictional black-ops sub-division called “Echelon”. The team is best known for its use of cutting edge weaponry and unique combat skills to take on terrorists and neutralize powerful enemies, in action-packed stories ripped from real-world headlines. American Hustle scribe Eric Warren Singer is adapting the live action screenplay for Basil Ilwanyk to produce.
Splinter Cell is one of currently two known live action video game adaptations Hardy is reported to be appearing in, with the other being director Reuben Fleischer’s upcoming production of the classic Midway game, Spy Hunter. In the meantime, further details remain to be seen with the long-awaited release of his next big role in director George Miller’s reboot road thriller, Mad Max: Fury Road, which is releasing on May 15, 2015.
Liman‘s new film, Edge Of Tomorrow releases this Friday.
