UNLUCKY STARS: Dennis Ruel’s Indie Action Comedy Feature Debut Is Online To Watch For FREE
When you look at the cadre of independent creatives in martial arts cinema who’ve impacted the internet, there’s no way you can miss the name Dennis Ruel. He’s germinated amply from his roots at The Stunt People with the exhilarating indie action classic, Contour, to starring and even directing feature films of his own, namely the 2016 crowdfunded action comedy, Unlucky Stars, and with that, ultimately becoming no stranger to the hurdles and woes of independent cinema.
Watch Tamiko Brownlee And Tony Chu See Red In SPECIAL ID – EPISODE 2: BLOOD
I got to briefly talk to Chu and Brownlee about this latest collaboration, and for fans of independent action, Chu‘s revival within the online film community has been a long-awaited one since going on an extensive hiatus many years ago for personal reasons. Chu, who runs his own professional photo studio in California, spoke to Film Combat Syndicate about his time with the premiere stunt team that started it all, Zero Gravity, and where he stood now with the newfound motivation he gained since tentatively leaving the field prior to getting into photography. “To return from a long leave of absence in pursuit to better myself as a photographer, I am very proud to see all the new faces that weren’t around during the time when Zero Gravity was more active online.”, he says. “Some of these younger faces were inspired by Zero Gravity and the reasons why they now pursue stunts. And that’s very humbling to hear this after all these years.”.
It's A One-Handed, Face-Breaking, Knuckle-Bleeding Bashfest In The New Brutal Action Short, RIGHT-HANDED
Coming off of a busy summer of online action hits like the explosive miniseries, The Hunt, this week’s latest gem comes courtesy of independent filmmaker and action director Vlad Rimburg‘s new online miniseries, Right-Handed. Based on an original concept by actor and professional screenfighter Gui DaSilva, the project was a year in the making, taking Rimburg into a vision that is quite different than most of us have seen over the years, briefly bringing indie action performer Tyler Williams on board with DaSilva and actor and fellow veteran indie action star Tony Chu.
As always, Rimburg single-handedly (see what I did there?) gets the job done delivering innovative fight choreography with DaSilva and Chu, shown in the blisteringly powerhouse performances by the two actors. Today’s release also grants the gift of seeing Chu back in action, being a member of the premiere action team that started the worldwide culture of independent Hong Kong-stylized martial arts filmmaking, Zero Gravity.
Chu will also be seen alongside DaSilva and Rimburg in the upcoming ensemble independent feature action thriller, director Dennis Ruel’s Unlucky Stars, so stay tuned for more info.
