Say what you will of the odd trajectory Shia LeBeouf’s film career has taken. He may be an oddball, but when it comes down to doing what he does, he does it damn well, and it’s fact shared amply with director David Ayer on the heels of their latest venture, The Tax Collector.
Collider debuted several stills this week along with the official poster from RLJE Films. The company is now out and about with an official trailer, featuring LeBeouf in what looks to be one of his finest, most immersive performances yet, along with Bobby Soto, Cinthya Carmona and George Lopez.
David (Bobby Soto) and Creeper (Shia LaBeouf), are “tax collectors” for the crime lord Wizard, collecting his cut from the profits of local gangs’ illicit dealings. But when Wizard’s old rival returns to Los Angeles from Mexico, the business is upended, and David finds himself desperate to protect what matters more to him than anything else: his family.
The trailer is also nothing short of exemplary, as is some of the admirable and elevated work Ayer has put out before in films like Street Kings, End Of Watch and Fury, and even Netflix sci-fi fantasy, Bright. Rest assured, say you want to see a film that’s “gritty”, then without fail. With Ayer, “gritty” is what you’ll get. And then some.
RLJE Films cashes in with The Tax Collector on August 7 in theaters, VOD and Digital HD.
