Well, at least YouTube made progress in fixing its search functions, so I can look for videos more optimally again. Despite this, however, I’m still sticking to a bi-weekly format after this while trying to find other ways to present content for readers. That’s not an April Fools’ jab by the way. FESTIVE FILM BITS: ‘Master Z’, ‘Triple Threat’, ‘The Man From Kathmandu’ And More!

Well Go USA is just days away from its North American theatrical release of Yuen Woo-Ping’s spin-off venture, Master Z: Ip Man Legacy. The good news, also, is that folks over in the UK awaiting its release thereafter will soon have a chance to view the film for themselves at the Spring 2019 edition of the Fighting Spirit Film Festival at the Mockingbird Cinema and Kitchen at Birmingham on April 28. The film, featuring Max Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Liu Yan, Dave Bautista, Xing Yu, Kevin Cheng and Tony Jaa, will screen right next to a small spate of winning FSFF shortfilm favorites, as well as Jesse V. FIGHT BY NIGHT: Catching Up With ‘Kill-Fist’ And ‘Fly-By Night’ Star Sunny Pang

My weekend has been rather tasking but I’m happy to present my latest interview catching up with Headshot, The Night Comes For Us co-star, Singaporean actor Sunny Pang to start things off. He’s been busy filming a new show and circling other projects while he’s now got two films lying-in-wait: searing heist thriller, Fly By Night, and urban martial arts tourno drama, Kill-Fist. FALSE POSITIVE: Production Begins On John Lee’s New Psych Horror

Ilana Glazer is officially setting first film role post-Broad City with director and co-writer John Lee’s psychological horror, False Positive. The logline is being kept under wraps with Glazer co-penning and producing the new film which hails from A24. Rounding out the cast are Justin Theroux and Pierce Brosnan along with Zainab Jah, Gretchen Mol, Sophia Bush and Josh Hamilton. Jonathan Wang is also producing for the film’s shoot which kicks off today.

I’ve been covering independent action for a long time and the latest trailer for upcoming series Warigami, reads a LOT like Edward Kim’s concept I covered in The Hit List column back in 2015 from Shuriken Films. Actor Jung Woo-sung (Steel Rain, Illang: The Wolf Brigade) is about to venture into directing this year with the production of a new action drama tentatively-titled Agent Scholar. The Joseon-era action drama is being described as a spin on the famed Kingsman franchise with Jung developing through his Artists Company banner. I had initially been sold on the trailer for writer/director S.A. Halewood’s upcoming British-American sci-fi, Division 19. I love the idea of incorporating low-budget sci-fi with action, provided that it’s smartly done, and I’ve seen a good share of such sci-fi to know what I like. Looking at this particular endeavor however, which earned Halewood a Best Director nod at the Boston Science Film Festival last year, I’m much more inclined to tell folks to be a bir more choosy. Alright, YouTube is being a pain in the neck lately; In terms of details, my targeted searches are only giving me generic search results when I do my searches for Hit List content. As a result, I’ve had to work twice as hard this week to find stuff to post for the weekly Hit List, which I’ve kept up for more than four years since December 2014. Changing search terms did make a difference along with some folks contributing videos for this week’s installment of the Hit List via email, but ultimately I did end up piling on more than I could handle in recent weeks as a result of YouTube not functioning as optimally as I need it to. BOOKER: ‘The First Purge’ Director Lines Up ‘John Wick’-Esque Action Thriller For Sony Pictures

There’s big news this weekend from Deadline with word that Sony Pictures beat out four other studios contending for action pitch, Booker. The deal concluded on Saturday following breaking news on Friday evening as talks were underway. Gerard McMurray is the prime choice to direct Booker, and from a script he will no less co-write with John Wick franchise scribe, Derek Kolstad. Speaking of, Booker is being described in itself as “a John Wick-esque hard boiled action film with an African American male lead”, according to the trade. If there’s one director who has earned his stripes for this kind of project, it’s McMurray, seeing as he’s provenly made the case. Filmart Sightings 2019: UNLEASHED, QUAN DAO, IP MAN Franchise, WARRIORS OF FUTURE, And More!

This year’s events at the 4-day Hong Kong Filmart were loaded with the usual assortment of titles and breaking news updates from various segments of the week. Many include trailers for such titles as Louis Koo headliners P-Storm, The White Storm 2: Drug Lords and Warriors Of Future, Donnie Yen actioners like Ip Man 4 and Enter The Fat Dragon, and even updates on Kwok Ka Hei and Ambrose Kwok’s Unleashed among others. With Jesse V. Johnson’s Triple Threat reaping rewards this week ahead of it’s VoD/Digital HD release, the celebrated filmmaker has another down the pipeline with action star Scott Adkins for Avengement, aiming to draw action fans back in select theaters and VOD on May 24. While released on furlough from prison, a lowly criminal evades his guards and returns to his old haunts to take revenge on the people that made him a cold-hearted killer.
