It’s been a while since MVD announced Sheldon Lettich’s Double Impact to their growing ‘Rewind Collection’. The distro banner has been quiet from time to time as the rollout got a bit complicated with certian legalities involved, but is now back and fully elucidating the film’s preparation for its tentative May 28 Collector’s Edition release on Blu-Ray. “Due to certain rights and clearance issues, we were not able to include these rough cuts.” the company said in a statement referencing announcements last year in hopes of presenting two alternative cuts. “We were, however, permitted to excise the never before seen footage in these cuts and bring you close to an hour of deleted and extended scenes. The news comes less than a year after Gunn was fired by Disney when right-wing trolls unearthed old, offensive Tweets from Gunn’s past twitter activity late last summer. There’s no real shortage of action movies in the industry. The rarity, however, lies in seeing so many talented household names under one banner (save for The Expendables franchise of late) in a film like Jesse V. Johnson’s newest ensemble gathering, Triple Threat. The film presents a familiar, albeit intriguing, classic betrayal/revenge story that dares to do what Hollywood thusfar won’t do; Granted, piting together the likes of martial arts action cinema favorites like Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen, Iko Uwais, Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, and Jeeja Yanin doesn’t deem as lucrative in a market saturated by superhero movies coming out of its orifices. Filmmakers Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce knew exactly what they were doing in the years leading up to the completion of their latest SBS webseries-turned-feature debut, Top Knot Detective. It took a bit of effort and evolution, for sure, and indeed it’s paid off something fierce in terms of influence, having become one of the biggest and most well-received cult hits of our time. Narrated by Hercules Returns screenwriter Des Mangan, Top Knot Detective goes full-tilt in its satirical endeavors to tap into the oddities of early 1990s Japanese TV lore and celebrity. Delivered with a mix of dated footage from an early 1990s TV show along with old and recent interviews with the cast along with an assortment of 90s-era pictorals, it brings little wonder as to why some folks who’ve seen this mockumentary thought that everything elucidated was true, no matter how good or juicy it was. Director Mikami Yasuo is heading back to the big screen this summer with jidaigeki piece, Musashi, opening in Japan theaters in May from ARK Entertainment. The official trailer is now online featuring actor Hosoda Yoshihiko in the lead for the epic sword drama about the legendary swordsman and his fated duel with rivaling Sasaki Kojiro, played by Matsudaira Ken. Musashi returns Japan’s legendary swordsman and philosopher to the screen once again. In an original period drama based on the historical facts of the life and travels of the famous Miyamoto Musashi we find an apprentice, an instructor and the account of a famous battle in Japan of the Middle Ages where many questions will be answered. The film marks Gurira’s third Marvel MCU appearance following Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, recurring in the role of Okoye, a member of Wakanda’s elite special forces unit, the Dora Milaje. Following Deadline’s news in December, the latest update for Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi brings word that Daniel Deston Cretton (The Glass Castle) will take the helm for a modernized adaptation of the Marvel property. Currently shepherding upcoming Michael B. Jordan’s Just Mercy, Cretton will be joined by Expendables franchise creator Dave Callaham (The Expendables franchise, upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2).
