Japan Society’s THE OTHER JAPANESE NEW WAVE: RADICAL FILMS FROM 1958-61 Looks To Do Rare Post WWII Films Justice

Japan Society is advancing a new film series next month with The Other Japanese New Wave: Radical Films from 1958-61. Author and researcher Go Hirasawa is curating the series which kicks off its slate of unearthed shorts and features from Japan’s bygone era of post-WWII cinema from April 5th through April 27th. With its inception in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the New Wave movement in Japan ushered in a postwar generation of politically engaged and artistically adventurous filmmakers that radically transformed the country’s cinema in theory and practice. The road sure seemed like a longer one between now and last year’s Toronto premiere for Vasan Bala’s The Man Who Feels No Pain. The reason for such windows apart from any sort of meticulous and otherwise necessary film bureaucracy is beyond me, but at long last, moviegoers are just a few weeks away from seeing Abhimanyu Dassani and actress Radhika Madan light up the big screen, Rope-A-Dope style through the efforts of action stylists Eric Jacobus and Dennis Ruel. In this Bollywood-infused action film from Vasan Bala (Peddlers), a young man quite literally born with the ability to feel no pain strikes out on a quest to vanquish 100 foes. The Official Trailer For SAVAGE Teases A Cold-Blooded Heist Thriller

Director Cui Siwei – screenwriter of Huang Bo’s The Island and Leo Zhang’s Jackie Chan sci-fi, Bleeding Steel – stirred a fair bit of attention with his latest scintillating and brutal heist thriller, Savage, after screening in Busan last year. It’s getting an April 26 release in China and for this, it’s got a great official trailer packed with chilling, pulsating neo-western flair to boot. Mt. Baekdu, heavy with snow in the middle of winter. It is said that many ethnic Koreans still live near the snow-covered mountain. A policeman waiting for his transfer and a group of criminals trying to escape from the area after finding stolen goods that were hidden will have a final showdown on the isolated peak. Starring are Chang Chen, Ni Ni and Liao Fan for its cast. Stay tuned!

DC Announces LONG LIVE THE BAT, A Year Long Global Celebration Of The World’s Greatest Detetctive

2019 is the year of the Bat, folks! DC is commencing Long Live The Bat, a new worldwide celebratory campaign to commemorate the 80th birthday of the iconic caped crusader. New artwork by longtime DC artist José Luis García-López, and digital paint design is by Admira Wijaya has been just released to amplify the celebration which kicks off at SXSW this month. An official press announcement elucidates any all fans need to know to partake in the festivities which will include exclusive celebrations, special theatrical engagements, the milestone release of Detective Comics #1000, live events and first-ever Batman brand partnerships. Actor Okada Junichi is quite on the go from the start of the year. He’s currently reunited with Sekigahara director Harada Masato for an adaptation of Burning Sword, while the summer looks to set forth an audience for his latest action comedy, The Fable, directed by Eguchi Kan. Okada dons the title role from a script by Watanabe Yusuke (Attack On Titan 1 and 2, GANTZ, Joker Game), based on Minami Katsuhisa’s award-winning 2014 manga about a killer birthed into his craft from childhood, now assigned to lay low in Osaka under a new alias. Also starring are Kimura Fumino, Sato Koichi, Yamamoto Mizuki, Yasuda Ken, Yagira Yuya, Mukai Osamu and Bleach and Blade Of The Immortal actor Fukushi Sota for the film’s June 21 release from Shochiku.

Borys Kit over at The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision column is bringing the gospel with actor Idris Elba circling the role of Deadshot for James Gunn’s sequel follow-up, The Suicide Squad. The report stipulates that as Elba and Gunn hit it off last week on Friday, the actor was the first choice following the departure of Will Smith who portrayed the role for David Ayer’s first installment in 2016. Also elucidated in the report is that Gunn, who now segues from his position at Disney’s Marvel feature film roster – leaving behind his script for a third Guardians Of The Galaxy which still needs a director – will use mostly new characters apart from Deadshot, including a possible return of actress Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Until today, at least one more Rush Hour film was said to be happening as it has been hyped with franchise stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker possibly slated to reunite on the big screen. It’s anyone’s guess at this point when that film will start, although thanks from a report over at That Hashtag Show on Tuesday, fans can now add not one, but a second iteration, this time from STX. Director Harada Masato (Killing For The Prosecution) is at the helm once more clashing swords and tempers for late Edo period piece, Burning Sword. Production is underway with Harada adapting author Shiba Ryotaro’s 1960s Shukan Bunshun publication centered on the wartime chronicles of Hijikata Toshizo, the Shinsengumi vice-commander who led the shogunate forces against the imperialist Meiji government during the Boshin War. The new film, slated for a tentative 2020 release in Japan, hails from Toho and Asmik Ace, marks the latest iteration for Burning Sword which saw previous film and television adaptations in 1966, 1970 and 1990.
