Australian duo Dominic Pearce and Aaron McCann have spent the last several years stirring a ruckus with the gonzo comedic mockumentary, Top Knot Detective. Originally an episodic then edited swiftly in feature film fashion to present to audiences, the film has earned countless praise from festivals and niche sites around and thus, the good folks over at Third Window Films are ready to oblige with a Region Free Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray and DVD on March 18.
In the early 90s a little known Japanese Samurai/Detective series hit Australia where it quickly became a cult hit. In Japan it was called ‘Ronin Suiri Tentai (Deductive Reasoning Ronin), but in Australia it is known only as ‘Top Knot Detective’!
Samurai, robots, flying tiger sharks, time-traveling baseball players and alien monsters: the legendary – and above all notoriously bad – Japanese detective series Ronin Suiri Tentai had it all. In Japan, the series was strangely enough no more than a modest success. But in Australia, where it was released in the early 1990s under the title Top Knot Detective, the series became a gigantic cult hit.
More than two decades after the unexpected end of the series, after only two seasons, two Australian ‘documentary makers’ set off in search of answers to questions that have fascinated Australian audiences for years.
What was the reason for the sudden demise of Top Knot Detective? And what happened to deviser, director, writer, producer and protagonist Takashi Takamoto, from whom nothing has been heard for the longest time?
A hilarious mockumentary about a hilarious cult series: one you would hope really had existed.
The film is also rolling out on VoD and Digitial; The Collector’s Edition blu-ray/DVD pack comes in a collectable slipcase and host to special features that include an audio commentary, a photo gallery, the original 9-min pilot episode that aired in 2015, and behind-the-scenes gems of production, pre-visual stunts and action design. It also comes with a trailer which you can also view at the top!
