It’s trailer day for Neil Marshall’s upcoming comic book adaptation, Hellboy, and yes, I was despondent and in mourning when we all learned Guillermo Del Toro wouldn’t be doing a threequel with Ron Perlman. I think after all said and done, we can pretty much rest our worries here; As much as we loved the 2004 and 2008 movies, at the very least, the official trailer now online and running jam-packed with energy, action and fun suggests that Marshall smartly tapped into the one thing that ought to pull some disenfranchised disbelievers back into the fray: Tone. By all accounts, 2019 may very well put debate to rest on how to hold a phone while viewing video… Project Xtraction, the Jackie Chan/John Cena two-hander from director Scott Waugh, is now slated to be packaged next year with an original series to be hosted on subscription-based premium app, Ficto, a new shortform video series platform from LA-based technology and content startup, Fiction Riot. The film is just one of three films announced for short form serial production among a listed number of up to twenty original and licensed shows for the new app following its introductory launch on Wednesday. The Standoff At Sparrow Creek: Audiences at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival got first dibs on Henry Dunham’s feature directing debut, centered on an ex-cop-turned-militia man whose investigation of a funeral shooting turns inward to his own encampment. Amblin Television announced on Tuesday that it has optioned the rights to Akira Kurosawa’s highly-acclaimed Toshiro Mifune starrer, Rashomon. Based originally off of Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s 1922 short story, “In The Grove”, the film serves as a hugely celebrated classic – initially met with negative reviews at home before its international recognition a cornerstone of cinematic history and film academia. The 12th century-set groundbreaking and iconic 1950 film depicting the mystery and intrigue surrounding recount of events centered on a bandit accused of raping a woman and murdering her samurai husband, will serve as the basis for a new series from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin’s television banner. With the first of now-slated two seasons for Korean period horror drama, Kingdom, set to arrive January 25, the official series trailer is now here. A Hard Day and The Tunnel helmer Kim Sung-hoon partners with award winning hit tvN series Signal scribe, writer Kim Eun-hee for the new show that centers on a Joseon prince’s suicide mission to investigate a mysterious outbreak when the king dies and suddenly reanimates. In a kingdom defeated by corruption and famine, a mysterious plague spreads to turn the infected into monsters. The crown prince, framed for treason and desperate to save his people, sets out on a journey to unveil what evil lurks in the dark. Gachi Boshi director Eguchi Kan is going into 2019 with summer-bound manga adaptation, The Fable. Enter actor Library Wars trilogy and Samurai’s Promise star Okada Junichi donning the title role as a killer birthed into his craft from childhood and is now assigned to lay low in Osaka under a new alias. Watanabe Yusuke (Attack On Titan 1 and 2, GANTZ, Joker Game) penned the script based on Minami Katsuhisa’s award-winning 2014 manga. Also starring are Kimura Fumino, Sato Koichi, Yamamoto Mizuki, Yasuda Ken, Yagira Yuya, Mukai Osamu and Bleach star Fukushi Sota for the film’s June 21 release from Shochiku.

IGN declared Thursday as trailer day for Lionsgate’s Hellboy which opens on April 12. The site also presented the first teaser poster for director Neil Marshall’s latest which you can check out below. Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge. David Harbour is staking his claim in the title role next to Ian McShane who will play Professor Bruttenholm. Also starring are Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Milla Jovovich as the Blood Queen. Stick around for trailer day in less than four days!

Still in the midst of completing her latest documentary, actress, martial artist and filmmaker Maria Tran (Enter The Dojo, Gaffa, Hong Kong Shogun) is also tacking on a feature-film adaptation of her decorated 2013 action short, Hit Girls, penning the script with screenwriter Elizabeth H. Vu (Mr. Ghost, The Perception). The announcement comes five years since Tran headlined the award-winning short with actress and martial arts star JuJu Chan, which she also directed with film partner and co-helmer Adrian Castro. If you haven’t quite pegged down what to watch in 2019 just yet, don’t hesitate to add Im Kyung-taek’s Older Sister (or the more keener-sounding Sister) to the list. This jewel is hitting the ground running on January 1 in South Korea, almost as fast as The Divine Move actress Lee Si-young who, per the plot, sets out to settle with her dark past whilst avenging her missing sister who has been “abandoned by the world”. I’m staunchly looking forward to rectifying my previous monster moviegoing experience this May with Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. The two official trailers that are online – second of which aired this week, are all but reaffirming this as a film not to miss, and I actually hope to make it out with friends by then. It all comes down to actor Satoh Takeru to prevent the worst case scenario as a secret government agent in Candyman and Anna Karenina helmer Bernard Rose’s latest, Samurai Marathon 1855. The film is based on Dobashi Akihiro’s 2014 novel, “Bakumatsu Marason Samurai”, and currently sits as one of our Five-A-Day entries of titles to look forward to in 2019.
