Upcoming Jungleland star Charlie Hunnam is set to join the set of Waldo early next year when cameras roll. Tim Kirkby (Fleabag, Veep) is directing the film based on Howard Gould’s 1982 novel with a story that centers on a disgraced ex-LA detective who re-emerges from his mininalist lifestyle in the woods as a private investigator to look into the death of an eccentric TV star’s wife. Alex Ritman at The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed that upcoming Dragged Across Concrete and Boss Level actor Mel Gibson and upcoming Alita: Battle Angel and Kung Fury 2 actress Eiza Gonzalez will headline the cast for the action-packed thriller. In my heyday after Jackie Chan crossed over in the 90s, my staple diet of Hong Kong cinema was always more geared toward Golden Harvest material, and having grown up on those films with legendary producer and Lifetime Achievement Award-winner Raymond Chow’s name attached, Friday’s news of his passing understanably affects a lot of martial arts fans and cinephiles keen on the genre. Chow, born October 8, 1927, was chief of production at Shaw Brothers for twelve years before launching Golden Harvest in 1970 with Leonard Ho. He produced over 600 films during his time, shepherding an era that would see the launch of many a film star out of Asia including the venerable Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Tsui Hark. Paramount is reportedly developing a sequel to Ridley Scott’s acclaimed sword-and-shield arena epic, Gladiator. As Deadline notes, Scott, currently directing his first TV series in South Africa for TNT, is eyeing a directing role for the film which Universal may possibly co-finance. Inspired by Daniel P. Mannix’s 1958 novel, “Those About to Die”, DreamWorks acquired the film which Scott directed for its 2000 release, starring Russell Crowe as, Maximus, a Roman General-turned-exile who infiltrates Rome’s Colosseum to avenge the death of his family at the hands of the Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Millenium was already turning the gears at Cannes this past summer for newly announced sequel, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, following Patrick Hughes’ inaugural hit last year starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. Going forward, production is expected to commence in March with Hughes back in the director’s chair and U.S. release plans now in the hands of Lionsgate according to Scott Roxborough’s update at The Hollywood Reporter. Netflix is currently in production with Nowhere Man, hailing its first Mandarin-language Original TV series for its international audience. The streaming service teased a peak at the cast in costume for its prison-scenes in a first look photo last week featuring actors Joseph Chang, Bo-Chieh Wang, and Zhou Ming-Fu. Nowhere Man follows the death row inmate Quan who learned of his son being kidnapped while waiting for the execution in jail. To save his son and protect his family, Quan schemes a jailbreak, only to find himself in an even more dangerous collision. Peter Mimi’s latest 1952-set thriller, Karmouz War, saw a release in Egypt over the summer and now the film will be setting sail in the marketplace courtesy of Premiere Entertainment Group. The Los Angeles-based company has launched talks with buyers for the film which stars Amir Karara opposite action star Scott Adkins, and is penned by Mimi from a story by producer Mohamed El Sobky. A British soldier (Adkins) is locked up by his own army for military misconduct, but is unleashed by the British as their secret weapon when fighting the Egyptian soldiers, who are led by General Yousef al-Masri in Karmouz, Alexandria during English-occupied Egypt. Karim Gawish served as executive producer for Lucid Film.
