I can’t really stress enough the kind of justice Cheo Hodari Coker did for actor Finn Jones’s cameo episode with Mike Colter in this year’s second season of Luke Cage. Jones’ series debut as Marvel superhero and Defender-to-be, Iron Fist, wasn’t the best received which cast an even better light on the compelling and chilling drama centered on his co-stars Tom Pelphrey and Jessica Stroup. That was largely a “grey area” factor in enjoying the first season which reasonably didn’t do much for a series meant to garner notable press for its martial arts action spectacle. Clearly, some things needed chaging going into season two and in the wake of having premiered exclusive footage for the comic-con crowd in San Diego on Thursday evening, the reactions overall seem much more optimistic. Bringing solid martial arts action to the forefront of cinema is always a game of patience and endurance. 2018 is the years DC Entertainment plans to tackle a new foray with exclusive content for its digital streaming platform, DC Universe. Its launch this Fall will be subject to an array of shows, films and other media for its community to thrive on, including the latest iteration of DC-inspired superhero team up, Titans. Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. KICKBACK PODCAST: Chatting It Up Among Jackie Chan Fans

On Thursday I had the distinct pleasure of being one of a crowd of folks to offer soundbytes of nostalgia and appreciation for the work of action star Jackie Chan. This comes as the 11th episode of the Kickback Podcast with Chris Jones went live this week with a multitude of voices weighing in, including stunt performers, podcast hosts, film producers and even martial arts students therein. His podcast launch this year marks his latest move since I actually began covering him during his activity as a member of a Leeds-based martial arts stunt and film troupe titled SG Action. REMAKE/RECAST: Jung Byung-Gil’s THE VILLAINESS

I’ve thought long and hard about starting a new column but I was promptly inspired by a conversation from a Hollywood stunt coordinator who was compelled to post about director Jung Byung-Gil’s Korean thriller, The Villainess. The film sparked a fiery fandom ahead of its release but fell flat with a number of folks who saw the film and witnessed actress Kim Ok-Bin in her kinetic role as an assassin forged from childhood. The first question was obvious as to who would one cast for a potential remake, while the second inquiry focused more on whether or not race should be an issue. It’s been a long wait since Johnny Mad Dog helmer Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire stirred the festival pot last year with his latest entry into the arena, A Prayer Before Dawn. Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders, Green Room) stars in the new drama inspired by from Billy Moore’s autobiography of the same name echoing the true story of a boxer thrown in one of the most hellish prisons in Asia where he fights to redeem himself. Producer J.J. Abrams may not have won over hearts and minds with The Cloverfield Paradox, but that’s not stopping him from advancing further in the realm of harrowing action and horror storytelling. His latest, Overlord, pairs him with Julius Avery who directs this sprawling, grim tale of World War II paratroopers who land in France on D-Day to infiltrate a village taken by NAZIs who are secretly plotting to unleash their latest zombie experiment unto the Allied Forces. The official trailer is live following its stellar showing at CinemaCon from Paramount Pictures a few months ago and the footage looks just as promising. Eureka Entertainment Signals Two 4K Restoration Jackie Chan Blu-Rays Debuting In UK Next Month For POLICE STORY And POLICE STORY 2

Earlier this month, UK distro outlet Eureka Entertainment made way with several 4K restoration announcements debuting in the region on Blu-Ray in the next few months host to the iconic and legendary work of action maestro Jackie Chan. Two of those titles will come packages together for a specialized release for fans with Police Story and Police Story 2 which now come branded with an official trailer ahead of an August release. Both films will have English and original Cantonese audio tracks which ardent fans of Hong Kong action cinema will easily appreciate. What I love most about sci-fi in the new millenium is that today’s crop of filmmakers still tend to express their creativity with an affinity for 80s lore. Make no mistake though – not all creatives can get away with it as many have tried and aren’t quite able to touch onto such a throwback and authentic vision. Pennamed French film duo Seth Ickerman, otherwise known ad Raphael Hernandez and Savitri Joly-Gonfard have accomplished something fiercely amazing with their work, specifically a few years ago in teaming up with synthwave phenomenon Carpenter Brut for the music video, Turbo Killer. Setting out to cover independent action cinema eventually brought me in the throes of then film duo, Dylan Hintz and James Couche. Otto Bathurst’s ROBIN HOOD Teases A Warrior In The Making In The Official Trailer

Keeping in line with the sleek and stylish air of action seen in Kingsman, moviegoers are invited to rejoin actor Taron Egerton in his latest iteration of the title folk hero in Robin Hood (sans ‘Origins’). Otto Bathurst directs his Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror follow-up, bringing less of the cerebral and just as much intensity to the spectacle that can now be sampled in the new official trailer with much more Jamie Foxx this time around as Bathurst’s choice for John. Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) a war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander (Jamie Foxx) mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance. Rounding out the cast are Ben Mendelsohn in the antagonistic Sheriff with Eve Hewson, Tim Minchin and Jamie Dornan also starring for a November 21 release from Lionsgate.

ILLANG: THE WOLF BRIGADE Gets Prequel Development, Netflix Release

Terrific things are happening already ahead of the upcoming release of Kim Jee-Woon’s Illang: The Wolf Brigade. The film is set to open in Korea on July 25 while efforts toward a prequel are officially in motion according to a KoBiz report by Pierce Conran last Tuesday. Webtoon writer Yoon Tae-Ho (Inside Man) is penning the script for the prequel which is being jointly developed by Kakao Pages and Daum Webtoon. The story is said to be set five years before Illang (formerly Inrang); there are any number of stories before and after Jin-Roh in the Kerberos saga to guess from seeing as how there are prequels to draw from on both ends, and so I’m not sure where Yoon is starting from. It’ll be interesting to guess too considering Illang is set nearly eighty years later compared to the alt-1950s Germany setting of the animated movie. That news comes […]

The last several years have proven otherwise fruitful for Renny Harlin who has been digging his feet further into China’s film industry and establishing himself accordingly. He last spoke in 2017 of the often grueling and humbling nature of film productions, his latest being Chinese video game adaptation, Legend Of The Ancient Sword, which is currently slated for an October release. It’s no secret that filmmaking can be a bustling experience no matter how big or small (especially small) the production is, and so he’s probably right. PATIENT ZERO: Don’t Miss The Official Trailer For Matt Smith’s Long-Awaited Action Horror Thriller

Completed in 2015 and after years of off and on release plans and waiting, Stefan Ruzowitsky can finally see off his latest dystopian thriller, Patient Zero. Sony unveiled the trailer for the film which hails from Screen Gems and Vertical Entertainment, now with an Aug 14 digital and VOD release, and a subsequent select theatrical rollout beginning September 14. In the pandemic thriller, PATIENT ZERO, humanity is battling intelligent, adrenaline-fueled creatures born from a viral super-strain. After being bitten, human survivor Morgan (Matt Smith) realizes he is asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected, leading the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure. Also starring are Stanley Tucci, Natalie Dormer, Agyness Deyn and Clive Standen.

KLIPPERS: Kevin Nash Is Out For A Kill In The Official Trailer For Ofu Obekpa’s Feature Debut

Actor Kevin Nash is tackling Nollywood next month with the theatrical release of home invasion thriller, Klippers. The film comes from actor and filmmaker Ofu Obekpa who’s been steadily building a name for himself on both side of the lens, even sharing unlisted credits on Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther. Smith (Kevin Nash), a ruthless loan shark commissions Steven (Ofu Obekpa), to kill his militant ex-wife (Libby Blanton) for the repayment of his debt, but once he becomes familiar with his target, a psychotic assassin (Conphidance) is sent to finish what was left undone. Klippers is opening in Nigerian theaters on August 10.
