Big scale fantasy epics from China have been and still continue to be a challenge from time to time. Every once in a while though, you get break throughs, and director Koan Hui’s latest, League Of Gods, looks like it’ll be one of them. Admittedly, the first teaser a few months ago didn’t leave much room to be enthused, but the trailers since then have all looked mostly fantastic, save for a few rough spots. A lot remains unanswered for the window of time between now and the last reports we’ve heard on various female-centric projects themed on actor Sylvester Stallone’s success with the Expendables trilogy. Dating back to 2012, folks like Dredd 3D producer Adi Shankar were said to be circling one such project while it was made clear a few years later that Killers helmer Robert Luketic would sit in the chair with Millenium Films for the aptly-named The ExpendaBelles. The latter project replaced its premise a day later with what read like a truly meaty action comedy contender for an all female cast, inspired by Stallone’s action franchise with our heroines forced to knuckle up when a rescue mission turns into a deadly fight to topple a mad dictator. BATTLEFIELD To Be Adapted For Television

I can think of a few video game properties that could probably go for some serious Netflix-similar treatment should they not end up on the big screen. That said, I never played EA DICE’s popular video game, Battlefield, but it appears to have earned a calling and is now subject to a television series of its own with Pararmount TV and Anonymous Content. HBO Asia, CMC Now In Production For Original Martial Arts Films With Action Legend Corey Yuen

HBO Asia and China Movie Channel are officially in production for Master Of The Drunken Fist: Beggar So and Master Of The Shadowless Kick: Wong Kei-Ying, the first two of an anthology of original Qing Dynasty-set martial arts films to broadcast exclusively throughout Asia for television. Hong Kong action stalwart Corey Yuen Kwai, and choreographer Guo Jian-Yong, both who worked together on Yuen’s stylish Shu Qi headliner in 2002, So Close, will executive produce and direct, respectively, for the airing of both films beginning later this year through HBO and their pan-Asian film network, RED. I don’t think anyone saw the casting of Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander for the lead role of director Roar Uthaug’s upcoming film, Tomb Raider. Nevertheless, it happened and there’s no question she’s earned it having made her way with the 2015 sci-fi drama, Ex-Machina with subsequent roles in Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and the upcoming Jason Bourne from Paul Greengrass. Further casting and plot details remain pending, though the word coming out as of Thursday is that the film now has a release date set for March 16, 2018.
