Lately it appears Universal is planning on going big with its franchises, and their latest movement on their now-growing cinematic monsterverse has been a sure sign of that. However, the biggest story right now is the buzz pertaining to director Justin Lin‘s possible return to finish off the studio’s biggest franchise to date, The Fast And The Furious saga. The forthcoming release of director Roy Chow‘s kung fu epic, Rise Of The Legend, is only a week and a half away from its initial theatrical release in China, and the momentum is definitely there. As for how it will do among the critics is still pending news to many, although one can only hope for some good prospects for a film that dares to make its case known among hardcore martial arts fans that are partial to the classics, and you really have to hand it to Chow for leading those efforts. Action star Donnie Yen‘s 2014 live-action/CG-hybrid fantasy actioner, The Monkey King, was a huge commercial success earlier this year, breaking first day sales records in addition to becoming the highest-grossing film on Lunar New Year in Chinese movie history to name a few. Since then, production company Filmko announced a sequel that would continue the adventures of the title charactet based on work of late author Wu Cheng’en. However, details on the development of the sequel remain to be seen while its production moves forward this month. It was just a few days ago that actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson posted an Instagram picture indicating a pending announcement stating an upcoming announcement for a new buddy action comedy with a hugely vague hint on who his co-star would be. “…In the right lighting and camera angles, we could pass as twins.” he said, and of course that would throw almost anyone off and into an epic guessing game of who looks like the hulking actor. I can’t remember exactly when it was the last time I saw a full row of cameras on a set for any movie for a “bullet-time” shot, but apparently this technique is still popular enough to use. Director Roy Chow became keen to this on the set of his upcoming new movie, Rise Of The Legend, starring leading man Eddie Peng in the title role of Wong Fei-Hung, and while some will sure have their opinions about wire-work – a technique used for decades in Asian cinema and stagework, its use here does have some technological appeal. Besides, the last thing I think anyone would want is to see Peng try to do a “No Shadow Kick” of any kind without wires. I’m not a huge horror fanatic, but lately I’m being given a few things to catch up on, and apparently watching director Sam Raimi‘s 1981 cult horror hit, The Evil Dead and his 1987 sequel, both starring actor Bruce Campbell, are a few to put on my to-see list. Starz network just greenlit a sequel television series to these films which garnered both critical and commercial acclaim in their heyday prior to the 2013 reboot, and the company issued a press release on Monday as part of their official announcement. Playtime Gets Painful In A New Clip From VENGEANCE OF AN ASSASSIN!

Late director Panna Rittikrai‘s final feature film, Vengeance Of An Assassin just had its screenings at the American Film Market as well as a red carpet premiere in Thailand before its Friday release, and while no reviews are out just yet, the featurettes being released to promote the film have yet to disappoint. That said, the film has just unleashed its first clip illustrating action star Dan Chupong getting down and dirty in the much-hyped “Fighting Soccer” scene in the film. There’s no word yet on how it fits into the story which sees Chupong in the role of an assassin infiltrating one of his own to avenge the death of his parents, but needless to say, if you’re looking to be mindblown, the style of choreography designed for the full-contact shots seen here speak for themselves, in addition to the first trailer. With all the talk of Japanese action star Sakaguchi Tak‘s abrupt retirement announcement last Spring, the possibilities for any more long-awaited films like a sequels to Kitamura Ryuhei’s Versus and longtime friend, stuntman/action coordinator Shimomura Yuji‘s 2005 directorial debut, Death Trance, appear nothing short of grim. Of course, this ultimately led to an outcry of fans within the niche who otherwise love the actor for all his contributions to the art of film and action design within the last fifteen years. Made in conjunction with New Jersey-based anti-bullying organization, Kickin It, the film, directed by Michael Baumgarten, centers heavily on its upward message with lead actor Jansen Panetierre starring in the title role. Well this is intersting news! I’ve never seen the 2010 installation of the sci-fi thriller, Skyline. The trailer itself was appealing though, but being the action aficionado I try to be, I eventually put it off. Now, with the American Film Market in its fourth day of activity as of Saturday, who would have thought that the upcoming sequel from Hydralux Entertainment, Beyond Skyline would have given me more reason to see the first? Uh oh! Shredder is on the loose and the city needs heroes! Time for Leonardo and her band of heroes to spring into action in the new short, Ninja Turtle Kids! Yes, it’s the newest online short from Monkids, a channel launched by a small handful of amazing, adorable kids in France by the names of Victoria and William Taing. Action actor and martial artist Kefi Abrikh gets his moment as the Shredder, with a cameo appearance by YouTube personality Bruce Duan.
