As the film festival season continues, fans and filmgoers are bound to hear more news of pickups for distribution for North America and other parts of the world. As such, there are at least two titles worth mentioning today so far. The Hollywood Reporter has announced an multi-territorial acquisition by Universal Pictures for Epic Pictures’ period fantasy action adventure thriller, Vikingdom. The report states the KRU Studios production from director Yusry Halim will get an limited theatrical standard and 3D release on October 4, 2013. Vikingdom is produced by Shireen Hashim and is based on a script by A Certain Justice co-director James Coyne. The story is centered on Viking mythology about a fallen king who teams up with four unique warriors to battle the odds against evil God Of Thunder, Thor. Warner Bros. has announced its next actor in line for Batman in the form of the actor who once played the comic book character, Matt Murdock, coined as “The Man Without Fear” in director Mark Steven Johnson’s 2003 superhero flick, Daredevil. Director Clarence Fok‘s upcoming film, Special ID continues to generate buzz with the release of two new behind-the-scenes clips this week. The first clip is an extended version of a BTS reel that fellow stunt coordinator Kenji Tanigaki featured on his own YouTube channel last week. The second clip shows Yen in a two minute reel that includes small interview subsections between BTS shots with fellow cast and crew, including actors Ken Lo and Andy On, and a little bit of footage of Yen’s previous 2005 Hong Kong hit MMA cop thriller, S.P.L. (Sha Po Lang a.k.a. Kill Zone), and its hit follow-up, Flash Point. February 28th, 2014 is the official release date that filmgoers will get to see Game Of Thrones actor Kit Harrington in the upcoming period disaster flick, Pompeii. A new poster and trailer were released this week for Wong Kar-Wai’s biopictoral kung fu epic, Martin Scorsese Presents: The Grandmaster. I began having some doubts about this movie when the first teaser came out back in April. It wasn’t crafted very well for its first foot into advertising the film for the U.S. market, leaving a real bitter taste in critics like myself. This month we have a trailer for director Kishimoto Tsukasa‘s latest Okinawan martial arts action comedy, Ryukyu Battle Royale. Other than the film being slated for a possible October release, there is not much I can add to my press here for this particular film. However, there is a small cast list I can share, which includes stars Seung Wei, Shingo Koyasu and Koike Yui, along with actor and martial artist, Akihito Yagi, who is best known for his fierce performance in director Shunichi Nagasaki’s 2007 brutal karate action drama, Kuro-Obi. The choreography here looks great-it’s fast and energetic, and has a unique, comedic appeal, a little similar to that of Jay Chou’s latest comedy The RooFTop, only without the musical flair. Comic Book Movie shared inteview this week featured on YouTube channel Flicks And The City featuring statements from Australian actress Sharni Vinson who is currently out promoting her new horror film, You’re Next. Sharni’s most notable credits include the 2011 surf drama, Blue Crush 2 and Jon M. Chu’s 3D dance extravaganza, Step Up 3D with actor Rick Malambri. In the interview, Vinson discusses her role in the upcoming film, and expresses her preference roles that are just as physically challenging. With this, she also indicates her intetest in starring in the upcoming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider reboot, and namely announcing her hopes for a superheroine film casting her as Elektra in the likely 2018 release of Marvel’s The Avengers 3. Albert Pyun Announces His Retirement From Film

In the past 24 hours, acclaimed action B-Movie director Albert Pyun took to Facebook to announce his retirement from the film industry, due largely to his worsening health conditions related to Multiple Sclerosis. With the announcement also came a few screening notices, in addition to confirmation that several of his latest films, including the upcoming sci-fi action adventure, Cyborg Nemesis: The Dark Rift, will be the final films of his career. I have long been a fan of Pyun’s work, having seen films like Cyborg, Captain America, and the first three Nemesis films out of four, Heatseeker and his second and fourth installations of the Kickboxer franchise, the latter with which in May, Pyun previously announced a developing webseries titled The Kickboxer, with Sasha Mitchell returning to star. The press release comes just a short while after new set photos were unveiled detailing the first day of filming. The press release also arrives just as fan site Expendables Premiere also brought new developments from the Bulgarian press that also spoke of the filming of the movie, which included some possible casting details that indicated Snipes’s possible role as a Somali mobster.
